Potato Pancake (I think?)

In line with matt303‘s suggestion, I took some of the mashed potatoes which were leftover from Thursday and mixed them together with a whisked egg. Then I added a small handful (all that I had left) of some pre-shreadded cheddar cheese.

This mixture was then placed in a small non-stick skilled containing some melted butter and cooked. After about 10 minutes it was turned with the assistance of a plate (to keep it from falling apart) and cooked for somewhere around another 10 minutes. This was then served with some salad, a glass of water, and a Cadbury Creme Egg.

Next time I make this I will likely make two smaller cakes which will fry quicker and be easier to turn. Other than that (and the lettuce for the salad being a bit brown) it was excellent.

Oh, and I also just finished The Wizards of Langley: Inside The CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology. It was okay, but the political infighting discussions wore on me a bit, and the author’s analysis of the CIA’s future at the end feels like a somewhat forced way to wrap up the book.

Hmm… So… What to say? I just returned from dropping my car off at Cass Collision in Shelby Township. The person seemed pretty insistent on having someone drive me home, but needing the exercise (and with it only about a mile from my house) I walked back anyway. With the weather in the 40s today it was about as cold as Mountain View was at night over the weekend, which I was pretty comfortable with.

Oh, so, yeah. The trip to Mountain View. Except for some cascading delays which put me at the airport a bit more than two hours late, all the traveling went great. I’d never rented a car before, but (likely due to the reservations being handled for me) both the pickup and drop-off went rather well. I was given the option between a Ford Mustang and a Chevy Malibu Maxx, but I opted for the Malibu Maxx in order to have something with better visibility and four doors. While I thought I would be driving people around, that didn’t happen. But… it’s all right.

On Saturday we headed down to Berkeley to grab pizza from The Cheeseboard Collective, which was absolutely wonderful. Mike, Joy, Jeff, Megan, and I ended up sitting on a ledge in front of the bank eating it while drinking Orangina and Reed’s Ginger Beer.

After that we went to the excellent Rabbit’s Food Meadery to taste a bunch of different meads and ciders. I really wanted to get more than just the single bottle of dry mead which I acquired, but due to the whole liquids on a plane security theater and my suitcase it would have been difficult to bring any back. I’ll just have to get more next time I’m out there.

I didn’t take very many photos while I was out there, and (stupidly) none of the meadery itself. The photos I did take can be seen here (photo gallery retired), though. These include a good number of my room, #423, at the Hotel Avante. It really is a great hotel, with a especially friendly staff and wonderfully clean, very comfortable rooms. I was quite happy with it.

Vegetarian Miên Chay

While over at Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace in Troy yesterday I picked up a $0.69 Vietnamese cup of noodles labeled solely Vegetarian Miên Chay. Despite a tremendous 2100mg of sodium per serving, I rather liked this cup of noodles. The saltyness is a bit much and the noodles clumpted together a bit, but it quite tasty with a bit of hot spicyness to it. It even includes a rather ingenious folding plastic fork.

The whole cup had an odd air of cheapness to it, and I have a strange almost-sweet aftertaste in my mouth (communism?), but I must say that it tasted pretty decent. The rest of the photos are available by clicking either the image above, or this link (photo gallery retired).

Cranberry Granola Bars

Last night Danielle came by and her and I (in addition to eating some wonderful Thai food) made some cranberry granola bars based on the Good Eats Granola Bar recipe from the Power Trip episode.

What was done is the recipe above was used, with the following changes:

· Salted sunflower seeds were used, and the normal salt in the recipe was cut back slightly.
· Only cranberries were used, and they were chopped relatively finely.
· Toasted wheat germ, all that was available, was used.
· Due to my mistake a bit of extra honey (perhaps 8oz. was used).
· A 8″ x 8″ glass pan was used, as a 9″ x 9″ (as called for in the recipe) was unavailable.

Other than that, the recipe was made as described. Next time I’ll do a few things differently:

· Use hulled sunflower seeds. In-hull seeds contain more fiber, but don’t crisp up enough to be comfortable for all to eat.
· Line the dish with parchment, as it was difficult to remove the bars.
· Let the bars cool part-way after baking, then remove them from the dish, then cut.
· Possibly use a larger dish so that thinner bars can be made.

Full Kilt Pub & Resturant in Mt. Clemens, MI

For my Dad’s birthday tonight my mom wanted us (my mom, dad, sister, brother-in-law, and I) to go to a new resturant in Mt. Clemens, MI called Full Kilt. (As of this writing that is a parked page, but it appears to be registered to one of the owners.) The restaurant is located in what was previously another bar and grill at 143 N. Main St..

I feel a bit bad about saying this, but I’m not sure how well the place is actually going to do. While I understand that the place has only been open for a week and a half or so, both the menu and seating seem to leave a bit to be desired. As mentioned previously, we had five adults (average size) eating, but the largest table available in a mostly empty non-smoking area was a semi-circle-ish booth (think bracket shaped: ] ) which could only comfortably seat four of us. We were able to fit five, but I ended up sitting awkwardly in a corner with no reasonable seat back to lean against.

Feeling more and more like its original design as a sports bar, all the tables prominently face four large projected HDTVs, each of which was displaying something different. One CNN, One Fox News (no, I didn’t like watching The O’Reilly Factor while eating dinner), and two other stations showing dramas. I may be a bit different from the average person, but I tend not to have a television on unless I’m actively watching it, so if there is a television operating in a room where I’m attempting to have a conversation I’ll regularly find myself staring at it, having drifted off mid-conversation.

The music selection was interesting, with various bagpipe tunes playing prominently both outside the building and in the bathrooms, and in the background behind generic satellite radio alterna-rock. This wouldn’t be too bad, except it was just faint enough while sitting at the table that it constantly sounded as if someone’s cell phone was ringing in the distance. And how much bagpipes can one stand, anyway?

Now, the food… To start, I’ve posted scans of the entire Full Kilt menu (photo gallery retired) in my gallery, if you’d like to see them. While there are a few token dishes like lamb chops, shepherd’s pie, and fish & chips, most of the menu is filled with items such as the Patty O’Quesadilla, Erin Go Bragh (corned beef and sauerkraut on rye), and Shamrock Grilled Chicken which appear to be British / Celtic / whatever in name only.

I had the Emerald Isle Olde English Fish & Chips ($10.99), which had a nice, light, flaky batter coating, but was served with very dry, typically American steak fries. Before the meal we each opted for the Potato and Leek soup (also available ‘loaded’, or topped optional cheese and bacon on top) which, while decent, wasn’t anything special. Fairly decent garlic bread was brought in nice quantities, but it was served with a rather poorly matched blend of cinnamon and butter (it may have been margarine, I couldn’t quite tell).

Both my Mom and Dad had steaks which appeared decent and had steamed vegetables (carrot, broccoli, and asparagus blend) with mashed Yukon Gold potatoes on the side. They found the steaks decent, but nothing amazing.

One interesting bit to add, when my Mom didn’t finish her whole dinner, she asked for a box for it. The waitress took her plate to package it up, and while doing that someone else grabbed the plate from the counter and cleaned it off before it could be wholly packaged up. Because of that the waitress removed the charge for her dinner from the bill — a very nice gesture. I have no complaints with the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff.

My brother-in-law Craig also had the fish and chips, which he seemed to like well enough. He also ordered a beer listed as simply Under The Kilt which, based on the description, seems to be Dragonmead‘s Under The Kilt Wee Heavy. Unfortunately, the bar had already run the keg dry (and was saying that the brewer has run out as well) and hadn’t replaced it with anything else. Instead he ordered a Tennent’s which was served straight from the bottle.

All in all, I’d say the food is decent if one likes typical Chili’s / Applebee’s / TGI Friday’s type food, but nothing worth making a special trip for. I personally think that a order of greasy cod and chips from Chicken Shack and a can of Batchelors Mushy Peas taste much more like any food I’ve had in the UK. Full Kilt seems to be Celtic (or whatever — it seems confused) in the same way that a 40-something biker who goes home to a McMansion, SUV, and big-screen TV seems edgy. It probably really wants to be. Really. Seriously.

Sure, some of the problems (out of beer, occasional forgetfulness) are just normal issues with a recently opened resturant, but some of the problems (tables, menu, etc) seem a bit deeper rooted and less likely to be worked out.

Cookies and Car

Now, to balance my checkbook.

ALDI

Huh.

ALDI’s brand of Raisin Bran is just as good as any other I’ve had, and at $1-something for a 16oz box.

Also, the $2-something frozen gourmet-ish pizzas from there are good.

Thus far I’m pretty impressed with the store.

Lazy Mushroom Quiche

Here’s the lazy mushroom and cheese quiche I made today. Here’s how I made it:

· Chop an onion and some garlic.
· Put 3 tbsp of butter in a pan, along with the onion, garlic, and a good size pinch of oregano and basil. Add some black pepper.
· Sweat things together until the mushrooms are just beginning cook. Pour it all in a strainer over the sink to allow the liquid to run off.
· Whisk together four eggs and 3/4 cup of 2% milk. Add a tablespoon or so of Clancy’s Fancy and some salt.
· Put the mushrooms and such in a thawed, docked pre-made pie crust. Stir in a handful or so of shredded cheddar cheese.
· Pour the egg mixture on top. Add a bit more cheese.
· Bake in a ~375°F oven for ~45 minutes, or until the top is just beginning to brown.
· Remove from oven and allow to cool down before cutting and serving.

PG Tips, McVitie’s Digestives, and Organic Milk

What an excellent afternoon snack on a day when I returned from a rather lengthy lunch, only to be told that I can leave if I want.

Now I’m sitting here waiting for 2GB of RAM to show up for the G5 so that I can scan negatives. I was able to scan the 110 slides with the 1.5GB in here now, but it was pushing things. Opening the 45MB TIFFs in Lightroom with the current amount of RAM causes the machine to chew on the disk for 2-3 minutes per image. This needs to change before I tackle ~1000 full-frame 35mm negatives.
