So. DreamHost is disappointing me again. I’m within about a day of dropping $1300 (and 2.5x per month) on a 1U server and going back to colocation with Waveform.
This is pissing me off.
UPDATE: Yep, looks like MySQL problems.
1) Thanks to everyone who reminded me that Mail.app pretty much does what I want email-wise. I’m also investigating Google’s hosting of email. Not sure if I want to give up this much control, though…
2) I’m trying to figure a way to more simplify things around my office. That is, I’m looking at moving my computer and printer to the basement. I also want to hang the speakers and monitor off the wall, freeing up more desk space.
Just need to figure out how to best route a DVI cable through the wall, along with what to do about my CF reader and the occasional need for access to an optical drive. Maybe a USB hub mounted in the desk and a cobbled together external drive would meet these needs…
More and more I’m finding myself wanting an email client which doesn’t have folders for sorting things, but instead has ‘views’. That is, everything goes into one giant bucket and where one would normally find folders there are what amount to canned search queries. For example, ‘LJ’ for all things from LiveJournal, or maybe ‘Honda’, for all messages which contain the string Honda.
Still having folders available would be good for some, but I’m not sure I’d use it.
I’m fairly certain newer versions of Outlook almost meet all these requirements… But why not Mail.app or some other simpler mail client?

So, I’m thinking of selling my PowerBook. It’s a 1.5Ghz PowerPC G4 15″ PowerBook with the following things:

· 80GB Hard Drive
· 1.25GB RAM
· Backlit Keyboard
· Light Sensor for automatic keyboard and screen brightness control.
· DVD Writer
· Bluetooth
· 802.11a/b/g Wireless (Airport)
· OS X 10.4.7 (Latest)
It also comes with a keyboard protector / cleaner thing to go between the keyboard and the display to ensure that it stays nice.
The reason I’m selling it is because I simply don’t use it enough. It’s always worked great whenever I’ve needed it, but (unfortunately) that hasn’t been often enough. There are no dead pixels on the display, and the entire thing is like new. The battery still gets it’s full charge, etc.
I also have all the original packaging for it, manuals, cables, etc.
I’d like $1200 for it. Interested? Please get a hold of me…

In case any of you are interested, I just finished producing an iPod Notes file containing all the NA numbers in the DOT’s ERG 2004.
Through the use of these Notes files, anyone can use their iPod to look up the number on the placards on hazardous shipping containers to see what they are carrying.

Well, it seems that YouTube has matched MySpace‘s level of suck.
Quoting from the YouTube Terms of Use, section 5.B:
“…by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube’s (and its successor’s) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels.”

I know I should be in bed, but I just made a change to my MediaWiki install which is very important. See, it’s my understanding that Google doesn’t like it very much if you are displaying AdSense ads on non-content pages.
Since MediaWiki has lots of these which I regularly use, I don’t want to upset Google by inadvertently serving myself a bunch of ads which are on these non-content pages.
The solution? Easy. Just don’t show ads on pages for users who are logged in. Since I’m using MediaWiki as a CMS, I’m the only person who will ever be logged in. So, to solve my problem, I wrapped the includes for the ad files in this:

I know this is really basic, but I imagine others may want to know about it, so I’m documenting it here.
Yay. All websites which I am going to continue to host and for whom the owners have contacted me have been moved to the new server.
Additionally, plans are in place to move all email over.
If things go as I’m hoping they will, I’ll have the server powered down this weekend. It’s too bad that I’m going to be wasting half a month of hosting fees with Waveform, but such is life, I guess.
I guess it’ll be back to my more ‘normal’ projects soon. :D
Things are progressing well with the server move. Except for email.
I’m having big problems with DreamHost’s email. I set up users and things just seem to never finish getting set up.
I’m not sure what’s going on yet… Hopefully tomorrow there will be someone who can explain to be what’s wrong and what is being done to fix it.

This is why I ran my own server before. Because if something was fucked up, it was my fault and I could only blame myself if things weren’t working right.
Option ‘B’ out of this whole thing is to drop ~$1400 on a new server and shuffle everything over to it. But then I’d have the same headaches as before.
