UPDATE: A bit more info. The Comcast page in the link above directs users to Symantec (yes, SYMANTEC) to report misidentified messages. It seems that Comcast now uses Brightmail for filtering.

I ssh’d to DreamHost and manually sent a message to a Comcast address (you know, the old ‘telnet mailhost 25’ thing) without problem. This was from jawbreaker.dreamhost.com, indicating that it’s not nuxx.net nor all of DreamHost which is blocked, just (at least one of) the MXs.

I filled out a trouble ticket with DreamHost, because they are the ones who will need to resolve this.

Hrm, I just tried to mail ‘s Comcast address and that worked. This is odd.

UPDATE 2: Now I’m not seeing any problems at all.

MySpace

Also, any band which uses MySpace as their primary online presence will not get any visits from me. That site is too damned annoying to use.

With web space as cheap as it is and basic design as simple as it is, there’s no reason not to have at least a standard website with some info, tracklists, and other such things on it.

DreamHost’s Junk Filtering

Another reason why DreamHost could be called crap:

They block some email based on a non-user-configurable blacklist. The domains americastestkitchencorp.com and dm-4.com are two such domains blocked in this manner. The problem? americastestkitchencorp.com is the company which runs America’s Test Kitchen on PBS, and dm-4.com is used to send travel confirmations for those traveling on Princess Cruises.

If Junk Filtering is turned on, mail from (at least) these two domains will be blocked, regardless of the user’s settings for mail tagging and quarantine. The only way to keep mail from those domains from being blocked is to proactively whitelist them.

That is a stupid way to run things.

DreamHost… Again…

So, I’m in a bit of a tough spot. I’m trying to figure out what to do about DreamHost. I haven’t heard anything back from my support ticket with them, so I’m pricing out options to get my server back in colocation with Waveform.

My current thought is to replace the likely-to-fail-soon 5x 120GB ATA-6 drive assembly (running software RAID1 and RAID 0+1 via GEOM) with a 3ware 8006-2LP and a pair of fairly commodity (probably WD or Seagate) SATA drives.

Total cost for this will be around US$300, plus resumption of US$50/mo colocation payments.

Gur. I don’t know what to do. I want to stick it out and see if DH gets better, but if I need to build an entire server and move things back to it, I need to get going soon.

Stuff

1) Thanks to everyone who reminded me that Mail.app pretty much does what I want email-wise. I’m also investigating Google’s hosting of email. Not sure if I want to give up this much control, though…

2) I’m trying to figure a way to more simplify things around my office. That is, I’m looking at moving my computer and printer to the basement. I also want to hang the speakers and monitor off the wall, freeing up more desk space.

Just need to figure out how to best route a DVI cable through the wall, along with what to do about my CF reader and the occasional need for access to an optical drive. Maybe a USB hub mounted in the desk and a cobbled together external drive would meet these needs…

Email with ‘views’ not ‘folders’.

More and more I’m finding myself wanting an email client which doesn’t have folders for sorting things, but instead has ‘views’. That is, everything goes into one giant bucket and where one would normally find folders there are what amount to canned search queries. For example, ‘LJ’ for all things from LiveJournal, or maybe ‘Honda’, for all messages which contain the string Honda.

Still having folders available would be good for some, but I’m not sure I’d use it.

I’m fairly certain newer versions of Outlook almost meet all these requirements… But why not Mail.app or some other simpler mail client?

PowerBook G4

So, I’m thinking of selling my PowerBook. It’s a 1.5Ghz PowerPC G4 15″ PowerBook with the following things:

· AppleCare through 26-Jan-07
· 80GB Hard Drive
· 1.25GB RAM
· Backlit Keyboard
· Light Sensor for automatic keyboard and screen brightness control.
· DVD Writer
· Bluetooth
· 802.11a/b/g Wireless (Airport)
· OS X 10.4.7 (Latest)

It also comes with a keyboard protector / cleaner thing to go between the keyboard and the display to ensure that it stays nice.

The reason I’m selling it is because I simply don’t use it enough. It’s always worked great whenever I’ve needed it, but (unfortunately) that hasn’t been often enough. There are no dead pixels on the display, and the entire thing is like new. The battery still gets it’s full charge, etc.

I also have all the original packaging for it, manuals, cables, etc.

I’d like $1200 for it. Interested? Please get a hold of me…

It’s going to a good home. :)
