PlayStation as CD Player, etc…

SCPH-1001 with CD Player ControlsYesterday I threw together a quick write-up on how I modified my SCPH-1001 PlayStation to have CD player controls. There are also a bunch of photos from the project here (photo gallery retired).
I think it sounds better than any CD player I currently have, but I’m not so sure it’s that great. I’ve heard from a couple people that it’s not particularly great, but even if that is the case, for the $39.14 I spent on the whole project, it’s not bad.
Also, I’m thinking that I should purchase a Tenori-on. It’s being released in the UK in a few days and will likely cost about US$1200. I’m wondering if I should get one, both as a toy and as an investment…
I’ve a feeling that people coming to it from using a DVD player or midi system will find the PlayStation sounds very detailed. When I tried my SCPH-1002 via the RCA out the sharpness of the high frequencies was the first thing that struck me, I’m not sure the sharpness is completely natural or more an artifact of the lack of filtering. Bass was quite lacking and the midrange a little over powered by the treble, maybe the bass on the AV out isn’t filtered out so much. Not bad for $40, after all I was running it against a $1750 Naim CD player.
I’m also tempted to pull out a lot of the output circuitry and install some different caps and such. Basically, what some of the sites out there have recommended… I’ve got a spare SCPH-1001 for parts, so maybe I’ll just order some parts and make the changes to that one…
