Lunch + Plumbing

Pad Namprik Pow
(Click for food photos…)

There’s my tasty lunch, an order of Pad Namprik Pow from Bangkok Cuisine Express in Clinton Township, MI. Unfortunately its consumption was interrupted by the guys from Roncelli & Sons Plumbing coming by to fix the leak in my basement. Hopefully that’ll be all set… The connector which was used by the plumbers can be seen here. I’m not sure what I think of it, but I can say that it’s not leaking… for now. I’ll keep an eye on it for a few days.

Thus far this has been a nicely productive day… Hopefully it’ll continue. Perhaps I’ll go work on the synth some more now and try to get the LCD displaying exactly as I desire.

Oh, I also bought red chili papads, and some random other ones. And some desserty things. Hopefully they will all be good.

I have air conditioning again! And the installers seem to have done a pretty good job. Everything looks nice and orderly, and the price seemed pretty reasonable. Also, it’s amazingly quiet. Metered from 2′ from the front panel, about 1′ above the unit I was seeing 72dB on the meter.

It’s also becoming much cooler in my house. Yay!

MIDIbox SID-NUXX

It works. Makes noises, menus work, etc.

It works. All of it. Everything on the board. Except for one little snag (one part label is printed backwards) the whole thing works as designed.

The input buttons, the LCD, the MIDI LEDs, the memory, all of it.

The voltage regulators run a bit hot (~150ºF when the LCD is connected) when using the 12V SID. Using a 9V one instead should make things a bit better. I don’t like this, but there’s really no easy solution short of using an external switching power supply and redesigning the board. Which I’m not going to do. It’s well within tolerances, though.

I think that next I’ll build a board to handle the 9V SIDs, then I’ll have two complete boards for myself. Then I’ll build either one or two enclosures. I’m also tempted to shove one into someplace interesting… Like a MIDI keyboard. :D

MIDIbox SID-NUXX v1.0 S1

MIDIbox SID-NUXX Mainboard v1.0 S1 PCB – Top
(Click for Mainboard v1.0 S1 Album)

Well, they are here. This means that tonight I’ll be assembling the first of the MIDIbox SID-NUXX Mainboard PCBs. Hopefully they will work. :D

For now I’m going to get some cheese bread from Hungry Howie’s for dinner. I know it’s not healthy, but it’s cheap and easily obtained.

Oh, I need to keep sticking with cheap because I just committed to spending $2525 to have the central air conditioner in my house replaced. This new one should be more efficient and it’ll actually work.

Hot.

A 12V PC case fan hooked to a benchtop power supply and blowing on my face. Yes, it’s hot here today.

Ah. That keeps me a little cooler while down in the basement…

When I was little I had a bunch of 120VAC chassis fans salvaged from various bits of AT&T telecom equipment. I used to hang them in various places around my bedroom in order to make it cooler. Up in doorframes to move cooler air into my room, etc.

Also, yesterday after visiting Erma’s with Danielle I was forced to launder some money. At least it’s better now.

Alaska Journal (2003)

Back in 2003 I went on a cruise in Alaska. Well, while I was there I wrote a journal of whatever happened to be going through my head. Since moving to the new site format I’ve neglected to post it. Until today.

Here it is, if you’d like to see it… I may still add some more photos, but for now I’m happy with it:

MediaWiki & AdSense

I know I should be in bed, but I just made a change to my MediaWiki install which is very important. See, it’s my understanding that Google doesn’t like it very much if you are displaying AdSense ads on non-content pages.

Since MediaWiki has lots of these which I regularly use, I don’t want to upset Google by inadvertently serving myself a bunch of ads which are on these non-content pages.

The solution? Easy. Just don’t show ads on pages for users who are logged in. Since I’m using MediaWiki as a CMS, I’m the only person who will ever be logged in. So, to solve my problem, I wrapped the includes for the ad files in this:

<?php if($this->data['loggedin']!=1) { ?>
...
<?php } ?>

I know this is really basic, but I imagine others may want to know about it, so I’m documenting it here.

Ahh…

Yay. All websites which I am going to continue to host and for whom the owners have contacted me have been moved to the new server.

Additionally, plans are in place to move all email over.

If things go as I’m hoping they will, I’ll have the server powered down this weekend. It’s too bad that I’m going to be wasting half a month of hosting fees with Waveform, but such is life, I guess.

I guess it’ll be back to my more ‘normal’ projects soon. :D
