Filth!

I’m surprised by how un-dusty the inside of the cold air return is, just above my furnace. I opened it up today as part of installing a second doorbell chime in my basement because, as anyone who has come by my place has likely noticed, I can’t hear the doorbell when I’m down there. Additionally, I tend to be downstairs working on things fairly often, so the lack of doorbell pretty much makes people have to just walk in.

I am also really liking Adobe Photoshop Lightroom again. Beta 4 is really quite polished, to the point where I’m considering buying CS3 when it comes out. It just simply seems like a much better app than Digital Photo Professional, which I’d been using for a while now.

Today an order of camera stuffs came in, too. This is good. Now I’ve got a hunk of protective glass on the 24-70 L, a lens cap for it, more lens cleaning stuffs, and step-up rings so the circular polarizer can be used on both the 50mm and 100mm lenses. However, when going to take a photo of the bottle of Fiddler’s Elbow I’m trying tonight I didn’t put a memory card in the camera. With the camera set to take pictures when no card is installed, you can imagine where the photos went. Whoops.

Herbs

(Click for full res…)

Well, the herbs are growing quite well. There’s parsley, green onion, dill, and basil almost fully grown. In fact, the basil has begun flowering. The small sprouts between the green onion and basil are cilantro, which I planted a few weeks ago. Hopefully that’ll grow nicely as well.

Now, what to do with it all… I’ve got no use for that much parsley, but the basil could become some great peso. If I only had cheese…

Ah well, I’ll worry about that later. For now I’m going to go finish building the last MIDIbox SID-NUXX PCB, the one for my MOS 6581-based box.

Stuff

1) Thanks to everyone who reminded me that Mail.app pretty much does what I want email-wise. I’m also investigating Google’s hosting of email. Not sure if I want to give up this much control, though…

2) I’m trying to figure a way to more simplify things around my office. That is, I’m looking at moving my computer and printer to the basement. I also want to hang the speakers and monitor off the wall, freeing up more desk space.

Just need to figure out how to best route a DVI cable through the wall, along with what to do about my CF reader and the occasional need for access to an optical drive. Maybe a USB hub mounted in the desk and a cobbled together external drive would meet these needs…

Busy, busy day. Papadums, samosas, electricity, water, oh my!

Freshly cooked black pepper papadum, straight from my microwave.
(Click for more papadum photos…)

So. Today. Wow. I take the day off, I’m busy almost the entire day, and everything goes rather well.

I already mentioned the air conditioner installation and the [first] plumbing repair and the Thai food. So, what else did my day hold?

Well, after the aforementioned things my parents stopped by to visit with their friends Jim and Mattie from Scotland. Jim and Mattie are here visiting for a few weeks, and my parents wanted to see things with the air conditioner, so it all worked out well.

Before they arrived I had just finished up installing four outlets on the lighting circuit in my basement so I can plug the studio lights in more easily. I also replaced the light socket above my workbench because it was becoming really flaky, occasionally flickering and popping.

After that I went to replace the valve seat washer in the faucet outside (it was dripping) and in the process discovered that the shutoff for it was dripping into a closet. Fortunately the only thing ruined was an old Intel Pentium die shot mousepad. Anyway, I took care of the inside shutoff (packing nut needed to be tightened), visited a hardware store for a bolt and washer for the faucet, and all of that was then declared good.

On the way home from the hardware store I stopped at Meijer, but the groceries I picked up there ended up not being eaten. That’s okay, they’ll be good later.

Instead I had two samosas acquired from the Pakistani grocery (Spice Shop) located next door to Bangkok Cuisine Express. It seems I have a thing for questionable samosas. However, whether purchased from a small stand in the Gloucester Road Tube station or from a counter in somewhat dirty shop in Troy, I’ve yet to be disappointed. At $0.60/each for vegetarian samosa, Spice Shop fits nicely with this trend, and those made for a great dinner.

Along with the samosas, dinner included the first papadums I’ve ever cooked at home. I must say, I’m impressed. After paying US$0.99 for this package of black pepper papadoms, I must declare them an incredible value. Simply setting one on a piece of paper towel and microwaving it for 35 seconds turns it from this raw-ish piece of semi-cooked dough to this absolutely wonderful, crispy snack. I can see myself keeping these around the house to ‘cook’ whenever I want something crispy with a meal. It’s far better, and far cheaper, than traditional chips. And actually spicy, and without MSG. Oh! And you can watch them change shape while cooking them. Woo! (More papadum photos here. (photo gallery retired))

I also finally photographed a rather tasty beer right before I began sipping it, but I’ll save that for another, more cross-post-able post.

Lunch + Plumbing

Pad Namprik Pow
(Click for food photos…)

There’s my tasty lunch, an order of Pad Namprik Pow from Bangkok Cuisine Express in Clinton Township, MI. Unfortunately its consumption was interrupted by the guys from Roncelli & Sons Plumbing coming by to fix the leak in my basement. Hopefully that’ll be all set… The connector which was used by the plumbers can be seen here. I’m not sure what I think of it, but I can say that it’s not leaking… for now. I’ll keep an eye on it for a few days.

Thus far this has been a nicely productive day… Hopefully it’ll continue. Perhaps I’ll go work on the synth some more now and try to get the LCD displaying exactly as I desire.

Oh, I also bought red chili papads, and some random other ones. And some desserty things. Hopefully they will all be good.

I have air conditioning again! And the installers seem to have done a pretty good job. Everything looks nice and orderly, and the price seemed pretty reasonable. Also, it’s amazingly quiet. Metered from 2′ from the front panel, about 1′ above the unit I was seeing 72dB on the meter.

It’s also becoming much cooler in my house. Yay!

Hot.

A 12V PC case fan hooked to a benchtop power supply and blowing on my face. Yes, it’s hot here today.
(Click for more moblog photos…)

Ah. That keeps me a little cooler while down in the basement…

When I was little I had a bunch of 120VAC chassis fans salvaged from various bits of AT&T telecom equipment. I used to hang them in various places around my bedroom in order to make it cooler. Up in doorframes to move cooler air into my room, etc.

Also, yesterday after visiting Erma’s with Danielle I was forced to launder some money. At least it’s better now.

Bird Feeder and Curry

New Bird Feeder
(Click for more flower pictures…)

Today came over and hung out while I did some work on the SIDbox / MIDIbox SID-LC (photo gallery retired) project. I confirmed that the LM7805 getting really hot was because I was feeding it too much power. I also confirmed that it will work fine when being fed 12VDC and 15VDC, for the 6581 and 8580 SIDs, respectively. So, I need to re-figure the power supplies used.

I also figured out that I left out a component on the schematic, essentially prompting me to lay out the PCB in a manner which keeps the RST line on the SID at +5VDC all the time. Whoops. At least that would explain the weirdly stuck notes I was having… I’ve got a fix for it on the prototype boards, I just need to implement it.

I think that I’ve managed to identify the last bug in the current design. That means I can move on to laying out the next prototype (beta?) design for what I hope will become the MIDIbox SID-LC.

Oh, and about that bird feeder up above? Well, after the bit of hanging out and going to Ashoka for some lovely curry, Brian and I ended up at Home Depot at 26 Mile and VanDyke. I’ve been wanting a bird feeder for a while, and I was finally able to find one that I like.

It is now hung in front of the porch, in a location which can be seen nicely while I stand in the kitchen or sit in the living room. Hopefully birds will start visiting it.

I also took some new photos of the flowers. As you can see here, they are growing fairly well:

Flowers & Patio Furniture

Vista Red and Vista Purple Salvia
(Click for all flower photos…)

No, my UK photos still aren’t uploaded. ‘s are, though. Well, somewhat. Not enough to link to yet.

Yesterday I took the time to (finally) plant flowers out front. I’d been wanting to wait until I returned from the UK so that I didn’t have to worry about finding someone to water them for me. I also planted the Chia Herb Garden thing which I’d had growing in the kitchen. I don’t know how well they will continue to grow outside, but it can’t hurt.

There are more photos of the flowers planted in 2006 here (photo gallery retired) if you would like to see them.

As a quick summary, I planted Vista Purple Salvia, Vista Red Salvia, Margarity Orange Portulaca, Liberty Lavender Snapdragons, and Regatta White Lobelia in the various flower holding spaces around my front porch. I also doubled the number of salvia plants in the rectangular planters on the front porch as opposed to previous years. Each box now has six plants, three each of red and purple. Hopefully they’ll grow well and provide some nicely mixed colors.

Now, back to more work… I just finished balancing my checkbook, which it was definitely needing. One and a half weeks of mixed currency charges, scheduled debits, and a few other things need a good bit of sorting out to handle. Fortunately I was sitting on a conference call for the better part of the morning, providing plenty of time to handle this.

New Fridge

Click for more…

Well, the new fridge is here and installed. The delivery people called at 9:50 and said that I should expect them between 10 and 1. They got here just before 11, and everything went great. Interestingly, they didn’t use any hand trucks, so the cardboard I put down in order to protect the threshold wasn’t needed. Ah well. I did have to flip the plug around before hooking it all up, but it seems to have gone well. There is plenty of room inside, and I think everything will fit well.

The old fridge claims to cost ~$75 year to operate back when it was made in 1990 / 1991. This new fridge claims $40/year. Figuring for increased energy costs and inflation, I’d imagine that old fridge would have just cost a whole bunch to run even if it was working in ideal conditions. I’m figuring the cost of the new fridge will be offset by saved electrical costs over the next three years or so, so this should be good. And it looks nice to boot.

Anyway, if you want to see photos of the new fridge and the things I did in order to connect it, click on the picture above or this link right here (photo gallery retired).
