Yay, Acetone!

There are few things as gratifying as seeing a project starting to come together. In that picture above are two boxes containing two of the three major components which I had to fabricate for the iSight Tripod Adapters. The top containing 40 cut, cleaned, slotted, and prepped body tubes, and the bottom containing the 40 bottom end caps, drilled and fitted with 1/4-20 tee nuts for connecting to a camera tripod.

Please note that the slightly rough slots in the body tubes are okay. The only part which shows in the end is the top of the rounded hole at the end, so those are consistent and nice and smooth. For the rest of the cut I just made certain that it wouldn’t pinch the cable during assembly.

The third part which I have to make is the other end caps, which need to have a precise rectangular hole cut in them in order to accept the moulded vinyl end of the Firewire cables.

After that, I’ll just have to assemble everything, package the adapters, and they’ll be ready to sell! As of right now I’m thinking of US$29.95/ea, shipped to any US destination.

Oh, and did I mention that the only thing I can smell right now is acetone? It seems that acetone not only removes the blue lettering from PVC pipe, it also dissolves the surface slightly, removing any small scuff marks and generally cleaning the pipe. This allows me to make the bodies a pure dull white while leaving the endcaps a nice shiny pure white. I think the contrast, combined with the black Firewire cables, will look pretty nice.

It would have been nice to have white or grey cables, but for a small run I can’t be too picky.

Apple Mighty Mouse Initial Impressions

[Cross posted to and …]

I’ve been wanting a new mouse for a while, so when Apple announced the Mighty Mouse this morning, I ran out to the store to grab one. And boy am I glad that I did… It’s really nice.

First off, I called as soon as the Apple store opened, and was told that they have some of the mice, and they are being unpacked while I talked to the person. Based on that, I was assured that there would be some when I arrived later. Well, once I got to the Apple store, it turns out that they had received just enough for in-store display, but none to sell. Fortunately, because I called the employee had set one aside for me. Woo!

After I got back to my desk I plugged the mouse into my PowerBook. It turns out that the drivers for it aren’t included with OS X 10.4.2, so by default it’ll just have the right/left/scroll functionality. After installing the driver, you get this addition to the Mouse section of the Control Panel applet. Settings default to make it act as a slow moving, slow scrolling one button mouse where the side buttons activate All Windows in Exposé.

I changed the settings to be a left/right buttoned mouse and left everything else as is. All the buttons can be set to any of a suite of standard tasks, or they can activate ‘Other’, which allows you to select any Application on your machine. This could be really, really handy…

Now, the feel of the mouse. The mouse maintains the idea where the entire body rocks downward to click. And yes, the mouse still makes a resounding CLICK sound when clicked. There are proximity sensors under each side of the tip of the mouse. If your finger is over the left side when you click, you get a left click. Right side works the same way. If you have a finger over each side and click you just get a left click. As I personally tend to use my left and middle fingers for clicking, this will take some getting used to, but it’s not a big deal.

The scroll ball is rather nice. It’s a slightly firm, smooth rolling trackball about the size of a small pea. It makes no noise when moving, and it’s hard to tell if it’s turning or just sort of rocking to the side. This ball actually works out surprisingly well for scrolling and I took to being comfortable with it almost right away.

Yes, there is a speaker in the mouse which makes an almost ratcheting sound when scrolling, but it’s barely audible — even less so than the mechanical CLICK of the Microsoft mouse that I’m moving from. Additionally, if one clicks down on the ball — which is actually pressing it down which in turn clicks the body of the mouse — a ‘middle click’ is sent. This happens regardless of where one’s other fingers are over the sensor. This works really well as well.

The side buttons for ‘squeezing’ the mouse work out pretty well, too. Ever since I saw the original whole-body-click Apple mouse, I thought those side lumps should do something. Now they do… They don’t move, or really even flex perceptibly, but they do work out well. One also has to make an effort to position their fingers over them and squeeze them, so it’s unlikely that they will be activated accidently.

All in all, this seems like a really great mouse. I’ve taken to being immediately comfortable with it. This should definitely work out well at home.

I haven’t tried it with Windows yet (Windows compatibility is listed on the box) but I can’t imagine it would work much differently…

So, all in all, I have to say that this is a pretty nice product, and a distinct improvement on Apple’s normal one-button mouse while still keeping the original slick look and feel.

Help?

Does anyone local happen to have a Nikon MC-EU1 that I can either buy or have? The only place I can find them is online, and I’d like one for Monday…

It seems that Adray Camera in Canton has them for $100/each. Hrm.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Hmm, I almost wonder if I’m going to buy one, if it’d be better to get a Harbortronics DigiSnap 2000. It does a lot more, and using it I’d be able to eventually connect it to a D70 or whatever camera I get next.

Juice Box

As mentioned in this Slashdot post yesterday, there is a rather interesting toy called the Juice Box which runs μcLinux and can display photos off of an SD card.

$12/ea at Target, plus another $11 for the SD adapter and a 32MB SD card. Should be interesting to play with…

And… Of course… The first image displayed on it was this one.

Yay! I finally picked up a wort chiller… I was planning on making one, but the materials would have cost around $18 – $20, and if I screwed up the bending of the tube and crimped it, I’d be out around $16 of that cost. This one, pre-made from Cap ‘n’ Cork near my house was $36.50. Not bad, and it saves me the hassle of making one.

These devices are typically hooked up to a cold water supply, then you submerge the coil in hot wort (sugary stuff for fermenting into beer) and it chills it. Yeah, the price is a little high, but I’d been spending around US$6/batch on ice. So as long as this works out well, it should pay for itself in around six uses.

With any luck I’ll rack this current batch of extra-strong stuff to the new carboy I picked up today. Then it’ll get parked in the basement for a good month and a half to two months of bulk aging. While this is aging I’ll make up another batch of the golden ale (beer #3) that people seemed to rather like. I personally thought it was great, too…

Fridge…

Click for more info…

So, I’m thinking that I need a new fridge. Mine has been acting iffy for the last while, and now it’s seeming that the freezer will swing from just above freezing to -20F. So either I need to clean the coils or get a new fridge. :( I really don’t like laying out that kind of money, especially because it’s around the price of a new laptop, just for a fridge! Ah well…

Oh, I was curious what people here might think of the fridge shown above. I’m thinking that a french door fridge (both doors open to one large compartment) might be rather nice, and with the freezer on the bottom it’d be both a bit easier and more efficient.

Thoughts?

Maybe I’m crazy or just a little out of it or something, but I’m kinda thinking that maybe I should sell my Dual 2.0 PowerMac G5 on eBay and just stick with the PowerBook?

This weekend’s experiences showed me that it’s quite a bit of machine… The only issue would be disk space, but I could use external FW disks when I’m doing anything major.

TiVo!

After what turns out to have been wasting around three hours trying to make it work via Vonage, my TiVo is working. Without connecting it to a phone line.

How?

Well, it seems that on newer TiVo models, if you boot them with a supported USB network adapter attached (most all of them are supported) and you set the modem’s dialing string to ,#401 it’ll appear to be dialing the modem and such, but instead it’ll connect via ethernet.

Imagine that…

Well, the TiVo is now all set up with USB network adapter and all. Being a good geek, I didn’t properly cable it yet, because I wasn’t certain if it had worked or not. But now that it did, I’ll fix it tomorrow.

I’ve also subscribed to a season pass of Good Eats, and the episode of Frontline showing at 3:30am should be recorded. We’ll see how it goes.

Regardless, I’m satisfied. I just wish that the Ethernet-based option for setting up the Tivo would have been a bit more obvious.

I must say, it’s a pretty nifty device… There’s lots of things you can tweak, including a built-in guide for programming the remote to control your HT gear’s volume and mute, turning on and off the front LEDs (this is big to me), network settings, internal diags, log access, etc. Definitely a nice box.

…and now I sleep.

+++ATH0

Wow, what a beautiful morning. While the drive to work wasn’t the quickest, it really was beautiful. Only an hour and fifteen minutes… I wish I was off work today so that I could plod through a park taking pictures of the snow hanging off of the trees. It’s just heavy enough to stick to absolutely everything, and the wind isn’t really blowing so the snow is tending to stick on things. (Snow!)

Also, the 40GB iPod Photo I ordered fully charged last night, so I synched it and started using it today. I must say, the display is much easier to read, especially while driving. It just looks a lot smoother, and more text can fit on the screen. The album art is also a nice perk. (Photo) Now I just need to get the old one cleaned up and ready to be sold on eBay.

Tonight I’m supposed to head over to my parents house to do some work on their computer. I also need to bring the TiVo so it can do it’s first round of guided setup which (for some unknown reason) absolutely requires an analog phone line. Yet after that you can use the device with an ethernet connection… Hopefully the snow won’t put a crimp on these plans, because I’d really like to grab the latest episode of Frontline. Tonight’s episode is called A Soldier’s Heart and addresses mental issues that soldiers can experience after battle and various other bits of military service and training.

Worst case I’ll just watch it live, but the TiVo service has been activated, so the device should be as well.

Shows like Frontline are the reason I picked up the TiVo. I almost always miss them, and while I hate scheduling my life around a television show, shows like this are really worth watching. Actually, a number of the shows on PBS restore my faith in television journalism. With all the AOLTWMSNBCBS soundbite-based crap, it’s very refreshing to see a detailed, well-documented story. And no, { Discovery Channel | History Channel | Learning Channel | Whatever } doesn’t hold a candle, because they all seem to be stuck on ‘Big Angry Shop Rats’ or yet another ‘Hitler the Drug Fiend’ or ‘Aliens: The True Story’.

Curiously this morning someone had arranged for Panera to bring in trays of bagels, and there was a espresso-based coffee cart in the cafeteria, all for free. I’m trying to eat less so I skipped the bagel, but a nice double shot of espresso was a nice change of pace from the normal work-provided crap-coffee.
