Honda Music Link iPod Adapter

Well well… Looks like I may end up getting one of these instead of the adapter I was thinking of making. I wonder how well it’ll work. Hmm.

Honda and Apple Offer iPod Music Link Accessory
TORRANCE 09/07/2005 —

American Honda announced today its new Honda Music Link iPod(R) adaptor in conjunction with Apple. This Genuine Honda accessory was developed to enable Honda drivers to utilize their iPod directly through the audio system in the all-new, redesigned, 2006 Honda Civic.

Honda Music Link enables consumers with iPods to select their music by artist, album, genre and play list through the Honda Civic’s standard controls on the audio system head unit. In addition, this system is the first of its kind to offer synthesized audio voice feedback when searching through the iPod music library with the vehicle’s audio system controls.

“We are very excited to partner with Apple and offer the Music Link accessory to our Honda consumers,” said Stony Furutani, manager of Honda Accessory Marketing. “The new 2006 Civic features the newest in many technologies, which are further expanded through the addition of the Music Link iPod system.

The Honda Music Link adaptor provides outstanding sound quality while charging the iPod at the same time by a cable conveniently located in the glove compartment. The adapter will be available starting this December exclusively for purchase and installation at Honda dealers. Suggested retail pricing for the Honda Music Link will be approximately $250 plus dealer installation. Honda Music link is backed by a full Honda factory warranty. Consumers should check with Honda dealers for specific restrictions.

Apple’s iPod units are available in the U.S. through the Apple Store(R) at www.apple.com and at selected retailers.

Wow, and this article at Ars Technicia says that it’ll offer voice recognition for browsing. Damn.

Watch and Camera

Well, that’s the watch I ended up getting. It was only a $28 at Target, so at least it didn’t really cost much. I’m still not quite sure what I think of it — although I do know that the compass band-like thing in the top of the frame needs to be removed — but it is only going to be use for this trip and possibly times when I’m in areas where there is no cell phone reception. It should work for now…

Also, when I swung Camera Mart in Pontiac to get some lens cleaning things today, I found out something interesting. First off, their single-lens Nikon D70s is $1189, which is just below the price Amazon and Adorama and such have it for. Second, on the weekend before Thanksgiving they are having some sort of promotional special where they will cover the sales tax of such a purchase. That means that I could get the camera for a decent price from a local high-end camera shop, tax free, and without paying shipping. Not a bad deal, I don’t think.

I’m wondering if this would be the time for me to get a DSLR finally. While I will be out of town that weekend, the person I spoke with said I could order by phone and get the same price, so maybe I could ask them to just hold it for me until I got back.

Hmm… It’d be really swell… Well, at least I’ve got the watch / alarm taken care of.

UPDATE: Or hell, maybe it’d be more worthwhile to just get the body and this 18mm – 200mm lens? That’s a 35mm equiv. of 27mm – 300mm (11x) which would be an ideal all-around lens. Couple that with a nice macro lens, and I’d probably be all set.

New Fridge

Click for more…

Well, the new fridge is here and installed. The delivery people called at 9:50 and said that I should expect them between 10 and 1. They got here just before 11, and everything went great. Interestingly, they didn’t use any hand trucks, so the cardboard I put down in order to protect the threshold wasn’t needed. Ah well. I did have to flip the plug around before hooking it all up, but it seems to have gone well. There is plenty of room inside, and I think everything will fit well.

The old fridge claims to cost ~$75 year to operate back when it was made in 1990 / 1991. This new fridge claims $40/year. Figuring for increased energy costs and inflation, I’d imagine that old fridge would have just cost a whole bunch to run even if it was working in ideal conditions. I’m figuring the cost of the new fridge will be offset by saved electrical costs over the next three years or so, so this should be good. And it looks nice to boot.

Anyway, if you want to see photos of the new fridge and the things I did in order to connect it, click on the picture above or this link right here (photo gallery retired).

Water Hookup Complete

Click for more…

Well, despite my plans to the contrary, I finished up the water line install last night. Now there is a nice tap located behind the fridge, waiting for the new one to arrive. (Note to self: call to confirm delivery date)

After some discussion with , I think that a GFCI may need to be installed behind the fridge. I’m really not sure about this, though… I know that GFCIs are needed within X feet of water outlets, but I’m not sure about a connection which doesn’t dispense water freely. I need to look into this. I *think* that a fridge doesn’t require a GFCI because it’s on a separate circuit and the outlet isn’t considered ‘couter top’, but I need to look into this more.

Bah. I’m sleepy. I also need to head over to Moosejaw over in Birmingham (uggh) at lunch in order to pick up a backpack. See, I had ordered the fleece for my new jacket from a place called Paragon Sports on Monday, only to have them cancel the order last night due to not having it in stock. I ran over to the Moosejaw store right by work and picked up the fleece (I think it looks really good on me — the collar is grand.) but they were out of the backpack. Uggh. I don’t like shopping for such things. Hopefully these things will last for years and years so that I won’t have to go through this all any time soon. That’s what I’m planning on, at least.

iPod in Car

So with getting the new car, I’m going to need a way to mount the iPod. In my searching I came across a company called Pro-Fit International who makes a product called the miMount which seems almost ideal. With the description on the page I’m having a hard time telling how thick of an iPod it’ll hold. So, I called the mfg… Well, the person answering the phone didn’t quite have this info, so she gave me the cell phone number of the designer, and said that he takes calls. (!!!) Well, hopefully he’ll be able to get back to me with the maximum iPod thickness for this holder… It seems like a nice design, and I think I could make it mount nicely beneath the dash, just in front of the parking brake.

USB 2.0 High Speed CF Reader

Does anyone here have a USB 2.0 Compact Flash reader which I could borrow / buy / have? I’m specifically looking for one that is extremely low profile, somewhat similar to this. I’ve found them on eBay from the UK, but I need one here. :\

Oh, I got one of the iPod photo adapters, and based on a test of 185MB of photos copying in just around seven minutes, I should be able to do a full gig in around 45. Well, that’s straight off the camera… I’d like to use just the reader and the iPod in order to save the batteries in the camera.

Thanks!

iSight Tripod Adapters

Click for huuuuge…

Yeah, production work sucks, but once things are done it’s pretty damn gratifying.

Well, I’m not completely done, but I have finished assembly of all fourty iSight Tripod Adapters. Yep, that’s what’s in the picture above… All fourty, plus the original one I made for the writeup / Make article / prototype / my use / whatever.

Tomorrow (or whenever) I have to figure out the best method for packaging them. I picked up forty zip-top plastic bags today, and I think that bundled up they will fit nicely in the US Postal Service’s smallest Priority Mail box of which I ordered 50 (they are delivered free!) pieces, along with 50 labels and 50 delivery confirmation tags.

Also, before packaging them, I need to photograph one of them and write some text which will hopefully entice people to buy them. They all also need a quick wipe-down with isopropyl alcohol in order to remove fingerprints, any dirt that may have gotten on them, and any wee threads of glue.

Oh, and they also all need to be tested. :\ That’ll be a bit of a chore.

Anyway, they are done. And I am sleepy. There is another photo of the stack of finished adapters here if you’d like to see that one as well. < shrug >

Blah. Yeah, I’m sleepy. And a bit lonely feeling. And the dishes in the kitchen are kinda stinky, but I’m too lazy to do them tonight. Goodnight for now.

512MB? Bah!

[Cross posted to and …]

I know this rant will probably get me flamed for being somewhat off topic, but hopefully some folks will find it useful:

512MB of RAM is not enough for OS X!

I suppose I should have know this and planned accordingly, but I didn’t and now I’m suffering the consequences.

See, I normally have 1.5GB in this machine, but when running the Apple Hardware Test the other day in order to determine if my Airport Extreme card was bad, one of my 512MB DIMMs tested bad. No problem, it’s a Crucial part, so it’s got a lifetime warranty. Well, I pulled the RAM to ship it back to Crucial, and now this machine is borderline unusable. I cannot wait for the RAM too get back here… Hell, maybe I’ll order another GB in the mean time, just so I can have something usable!

(Note: I could not do a cross ship as I purchased the RAM through a vendor. Crucial still handles the warranty. The machine is a dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5, and I installed the extra RAM after unboxing before it was ever powered on, so I hadn’t ever realized low memory would be this painful.)

PC Needed

Can someone help me find a particular PC? I’m looking for an older machine, so long as the CPU is passively cooled. Yeah, I mean one of those giant heatsink things just hanging out there…

I also want to stick a dead quiet hard disk in there and finally have a silent firewall. Mine’s getting old and noisy.
