Fridge…

Click for more info…

So, I’m thinking that I need a new fridge. Mine has been acting iffy for the last while, and now it’s seeming that the freezer will swing from just above freezing to -20F. So either I need to clean the coils or get a new fridge. :( I really don’t like laying out that kind of money, especially because it’s around the price of a new laptop, just for a fridge! Ah well…

Oh, I was curious what people here might think of the fridge shown above. I’m thinking that a french door fridge (both doors open to one large compartment) might be rather nice, and with the freezer on the bottom it’d be both a bit easier and more efficient.

Thoughts?

get one with a tv on the front. heh

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Hehe, one that’s programmable over the internet!

      1. pfrank May 10, 2005

yeah, there should be some kind of rfid system in place so the fridge can detect when you’re low on something and automatically places an order over the internet. And the groceries show up on your doorstep later that day. But then it gets a virus that makes it think that your fridge has capacity for 600,000 cartons of eggs, and a semi shows up the next day….

NO! THEN THE GOVERNMENT CAN TRACK WHAT I EAT WITHOUT DIGGING THROUGH THE SOLID WASTE IN THE DRAIN PIPE.

It’s already easy enough for them as it is…

That reminds me, I need to invest in a muffin muncher. Just to be sure.

i *love* my freezer on the bottom fridge. the only thing i wish i’d done was get a model with an ice maker/water dispenser, but otherwise it’s awesome.

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

This one has that, but I’m not sure if it’s what I want… I don’t use much ice. Although maybe I’d drink more water if it was pre-chilled and filtered… Hmm…

I’m just not sure about the french door thing. It might be a pain to get into when cooking.

      1. hannunvaakuna May 10, 2005

mine has a regular fridge door on top, not the french doors. i think the side-by-side doors are annoying, but that’s me. i like that the shelves are glass (easier to clean), they’re adjustible, and they slide in/out so you can grab stuff pretty easily.

        1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

I think I’ll have to go dig around at Lowes and see which ones I can find on clearance…

Time to acquire a 10% off coupon!

          1. hannunvaakuna May 10, 2005

i got mine at ABC Warehouse… they’ll match prices and you can play the stupid “let’s make a deal” game, too.

          2. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

The thing with Lowes and HD is it’s really easy to get a 10% off coupon, which will apply after they match prices. And you don’t have to deal with ABC’s salesfolks, whom I generally HATE.

            good point. have fun (:

          4. fakymcfakerson May 10, 2005

Really easy to get the 10% coupon? Hm. How does one acquire such a beast?

  3. ciani May 10, 2005

my parents have that fridge or one disturbingly like it. I liked it whenever I’ve gone to visit them. They seem to really like it. Does that one have the little water dispenser on the inside left of the fridge?

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Hehe, yep. A little rubber button thing you can push.

Do you find that it’s harder to get things out when cooking? I’d think the french doors might cause a problem with that… There’s two doors to open in order to get to everything.

      1. ciani May 10, 2005

well, when I am cooking, I take everything out ahead of time, so no. but you don’t necessarily have to open both doors unless you are trying to get into the large bottom drawer or get stuff from both sides. The nice thing about the double doors is that you don’t have a big huge door blocking the way for people to get by if you are not the only one in the kitchen.

        1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Ahh, okay. Often when I cook stuff needs to stay in the fridge for a while, or I’ll just be popping in to get things.

Actually, what I get might be more depedent on the price… I’ll probably end up going to Lowe’s and seeing what’s there, somehow getting 10% off, etc.

  4. jenifoto May 10, 2005

I like it. I have a side by side door system and it’s quite impractical if you have pizza leftovers or try to by one of those Digornio Frozen Pizzas, as they won’t fit in there cause the freezer side is too narrow.

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Oh, yeah… that would be crappy. Although because I’m *always* on the left side of the frige when in the kitchen, I almost think that a single door on the top would be best. Hmm… Decisions… Decisions…

  5. chrisrohn May 10, 2005

This refrigerator also meets handicap accessibility standards.

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Hmm, I hadn’t thought of that… I imagine that the drawer + shorter doors would make it easier to work with if one can’t move around so well.

  6. glove_puppet May 10, 2005

It’s very pretty, as fridges go.

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Thanks, but it’s also not cheap. :\

      And I am. :(

I think theres a Sears outlet store ’round here somewheres. A friend of mine just bought a stainless steel fridge, similar to the one you pictured, and got it at a ridiculously low price because it has a small dent on the side near the bottom. She got her stove the same way. We figured that she got both pieces for less than what the fridge was retailing at other locations.

        1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Oh, neat… I just can’t get stainless. I absolutely hate how it looks… The only way I’d want stainless is if I was getting a real commercial piece. For home use I want a solid color.

Any idea where it was at?

          1. kitschicat May 10, 2005

It might be the one by my house, on Gratiot north of 8 mile, it’s actually called “Searz.” Heh…they have had legal issues due to the name but apparently they have good prices.

          2. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

            Ha, really? That’s nuts…

Usually what I do is just go wander around Lowes, because they have a section of scratch and dent stuff off to the side. Just FYI, they have that fridge I pictured in the original post, except in beige, for $1000 even if you’re interested.

          3. jenihead May 10, 2005

I think its in Livonia. Im 99.9% sure if you go to the sears webpage they have a store locator and you can search for outlets specifically.

    that is one sexy fridge

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Hehe, thanks. Although I’m thinking that I probably won’t be getting it.

  8. dethany May 10, 2005

    that is pretty hot.

i should get a sink installed in my place one of these days, i am not very good at this domestication bit. ;)

just a few more days and i am blasting the hellhole out!

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

That fridge, at normal price, also costs more than my PowerBook. :(

      hehe…

I’m sure you’ll get a place that’s a bit more domestic-y when you are living some place that’s a bit more suitable for kitchen/cooking/living type of habitation. With your own loo and all. ;)

      1. dethany May 10, 2005

yeah….i do and don’t want that…but for the price once i’m there alone, i’m pretty interested in pimping it out. my floors do rock, at least. :)

        1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

Hehe, yeah… And the view is *amazing*. You just need some more basics, like proper plumbing and electricity. ;)

If you need ideas on how to do things, let me know…

  9. kitschicat May 10, 2005

I think it’s beeoooootiful! I like the freezer on the bottom and the french doors. Very efficient and purty to boot!

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

It is! It’s really shiny… I just don’t know if the french doors would be a good idea in my kitchen. I’m not so sure it’d be that usable. :( Maybe a single door up top would be better…

Hmm, I really should go play with it more.

  10. sugarcoatedlie May 10, 2005

well, I don’t know anything about refridgerators really, but I LOVE the layout of that one.

  11. rckstrism May 10, 2005

Why do you think it would not be a good idea in your kitchen?

    1. c0nsumer May 10, 2005

The way the one door opens to the left… Everything in my kitchen happens to the left of the fridge, so a predominantly right-opening fridge is probably a better idea.

      1. rckstrism May 10, 2005

True…but if it was deeper then say your counter or stove….the door would clear it….but just measuring would a smart thing…and Im so sure you already have :)

  12. fakymcfakerson May 10, 2005

The fridge is gorgeous, no doubt about it.

As far as functionality, it’s definitely better than the side-by-sides, but the French door makes me wonder about the quality of the seal in the center- I’d probably go for the asymmetrical single-door look. I remember reading something about the bottom-freezer being differently energy-efficient, too (how’s that for bad sentence structure?), but I can’t remember if it was better or worse than the top-freezer.

And, as a side note, to keep your refridgerator running at peak efficiency, you should technically clean the coils every six months or so, clean out the drip plate/line every year or two, and generally give it a tune-up whenever you can. Keep it running clean and all that. Check your fridge’s owner’s manual for instructions- should all be in there.
