MIDIbox SID-NUXX Update
July 27, 2006
I have just ordered the last of the parts needed for building the first MIDIbox SID-NUXX. Provided everything goes as planned I will simply have to wait for the parts to arrive, then assemble the synth. If that goes as planned, I can build one for Bryan, a second one for myself, then determine what will be done with the other two PCB sets. :D
Oh, I had to pull a weird hack to order the front panel PCBs. It will require me to cut out the center of each board, but that shouldn’t be too difficult.
Now I’m going home. :D
hell yeah! :throws money down:
I need to talk with you about some things… Namely, what color do you want your case, and what color do you want the LCD / OLED?
Choices are as follows:
Case: Silver or Black
Display: Green letters on black OLED or which of the 20×2 LCDs from here.
Pushbuttons: I’d like to theme these with the display, which means probably red, blue, green, or black. Let me know if you want something different.
Front / Rear Panel Artwork: See here. That’s my default. I don’t think green letters will look good, but on silver black / blue would. Let me know what you want.
And to finally reiterate, you have a MOS 6581 SID, right? I want to get the MOS 6581 part right…
i would like a black case, red LCD, red pushbuttons, and blue lettering.
MOS6581 is my chip.
I remembered I ordered a 2×20 green LCD with black lettering. maybe we could swap for your red one?
Actually, I’ve got that red one here still… It’s red lettering with a dark-ish background.
Not sure about the swap, but I’ll be sure you get the rest… Do you want MOS 6581 on the front? It’d go in the same place as CSG 8580 on the example I posted…
Do you want blue lettering just for the logo / SID name, or everything? I’m going with color just for the logos, and white for everything else… Just to make it easy to read…
make the logo/sid name red then and have MOS 6581 on the front. :)
Okay, so red logo and white lines / In / Out ledgers on the front?
And I presume white port / whatever labeling on the rear?
I’m sure there would be some people (ahem) who would consider compensating you to take one off your hands.
Actually, if you want one, then they will all be called for.
Do you use an instant messenger of any sort? If you want it, I’ll need to discuss the options with you… Panel colors, etc. Or, I could just bring the parts with me to SFO. Actually… I won’t have all the parts by then. Hrm. We’ll need to talk about it. :)
Yeah, bdufdiskc on aim… though I’m not usually on it during pst work hours… or much at all ever except for specific purposes.
Well, it’ll be a while before I’m ready to really ship anything out anyway…
Just curious, are you going to be wanting a wholly assembled synth, or just boards + partlist?
This thing isn’t cheap to assemble. Probably around… $210 when complete. Minus the SID, of course.
Nah, I can do the assembly myself, that’s half the fun! ;0)
I’m on aim atm, btw.
Darn, I guess I missed you. I’m sorry. I’m on all day from work generally, though…
Just to save the whole double-shipping thing and stuff, would you want just a pair of PCBs then? I’ve got the *whole* parts list published… Then you could pick all the colors yourself and stuff.
Also, the pair of PCBs cost around US$32. $13/each (I think) plus 1/5th of the shipping to my house ($6 total).
I’m cool with whichever is easiest for you to deal with, is it all mouser stuff?
Yep, all Mouser except for the display, which is from Crystalfontz. If I have all the boards by the time I head out to SFO, I’ll bring them then. Otherwise I’ll just have to ship them…
Oh, wait, and McMaster-Carr for some of the fasteners. I’ll throw some of those in, though… Just because one normally needs to order from them in quantity, which I’m doing anyway. As the screws are black oxide coated to match they’ll only work out if you use the black enclosure, but… yeah. I think the black looks best anyway.
By the way, I’m using an OLED in my two… You might want to do the same. US$40 or so shipped from Crystalfontz and they seem to have the same pinout as the LCD. I guess the only difference is that the contrast pot will work backwards with an OLED.
I’ll get more detail available later, both when I don’t have a giant bottle of Belgian-ish beer in me, and I’ve actually got everything put together cohesively. What I do have, currently, is all available here, though.
Sorry, I meant $210 or so for parts. I wouldn’t charge to assemble it.
