So I just emailed IBM… I’m hoping for some help from their historical / archive department. I’ve got the bit of core memory that I think came from an IBM machine. See, I want to frame these pieces, but it’d be nice to add a tag crediting where these pieces actually came from. Maybe even some photos of the machine itself. Hopefully they’ll write me back…
You need to frame that. I am going to frame my core memory.
I’m going to. I have four identical pieces and I’m thinking that I want to do a windowpane config, dark cherry-like frame (to match the furniture), white matte board with black core, with a white backdrop with the core memory sitting on that. It’s hard to picture, but I’m imagening a thin black line spaced just outside the black frame of the core memory. I’m also going to straighten the wires on it. Unfortunately IBM shot me down, asking for part numbers and such, of which there are none. My next best hope is random computer museums and restoration groups.
i’d just call ibm corporate and tell them what you’re trying to do, maybe after a few transfers you’ll find someone who can give you some information on it. :)
I emailed them… the normal group asked for part numbers, and the historical group’s website says they are closed while they move. :( I’ve also tried the PR person at computermuseum.org, but they are out until Monday.
Hey, that’s a pretty cool idea!
Framed computer parts :)
