[Yes, this has been cross posted. Sorry, but I’m trying to get lots of opinions.]

Sometime around the end of October I should be receiving a Apple PowerMac G5. I want to build a stand for it… I’m curious what people think of this idea:

– 1/2″ thick aluminum plate
– sized approximately 1/2″ larger than the G5 on each side
– Wire brushed or sand blasted to apply texture to metal
– Lacquer or epoxy coated to prevent corrosion
– Thin piece of glass on top of Al block
– G5 setting on top of assembly
– Possibly casters, if I ever decide to put it all on the floor

So, how do people think this will turn out?

Sounds good too me remember aluminum doesn’t corrode but if you do sandblast it will pick up oils from your fingers and have dark spots. More than likely you may want to have the aluminum anodized. There are some local companies that I used to use that will anodize it for a reasonable price.

Really? Got the names of any companies for anodizing handy? I’m thinking a sandblast or wire brush finish then laquered.

Hmm… Cheap anodizing? Got the names/numbers of a place that does it? I’m thinking a nice uncolored anodizing would be good.

I used to use STI plating back in the day i called (248-744-0445) they are part of a company called tech co plating or some such now, talk to bill he does the anodizing they are in Madison Heights. Looks like the minimum charge is about 60$ its gone up since I used them. I did reference a piece 12’x12’by 36’ in formed plate aluminum (guessed dimensions of a stand) he said no problem that’s would not exceed minimum price. They do a lot of different colors to so if you want blue anodized or red etc just talk to em.

you can save money by using regular sheet metal and brushing it. When you clearcoat it you seal it from weather and it is just as good.

The original source of the stand idea is the fact that the G5 is about 5″ deeper than the wire shelf I want to put it on. I originally thought a 1/2″ piece of glass would do the trick, but when I found Al for $35 shipped, I figured I’d try that route.

I would etch the glass plate as well, either with acid or a Dremel.

Heh… I saw that… Too much money, though. My main point is that my shelf is about 5″ too narrow for the G5. So, I need to make a platform for it. This has all translated into a etched metal slab, etc.
