HP/EDS and Fog

Fog seen looking out my front window / doorwall on the morning of 13-May-2008.

When I was leaving for work this morning, and throughout almost the entire drive, it was abnormally foggy. This was really nice, as I like fog, I just wish I could have gone out in the woods on my bike and enjoyed it that way.

Also, it’s been confirmed that HP is going to buy EDS. I don’t know many details, except that EDS will probably maintain its name / brand, and that the drastic (~25% or so) increase in EDS’ share price made my 401(k) go up a bit, which is kinda nice.

Cold!

I was able to knock icicles off of trees while riding up to the bank. Danielle and I are going to meet up with my parents, grandparents, and a bunch of other family members at a church fish fry tonight, so I needed some cash to pay for fish and chips.

I found that:

– Riding to the bank takes the same amount of time, even when I have to wait at 23 and Schoenherr for the lights. (Likely because making the left turn to the bank takes two or three light changes in a car, and one on a bike.)
– It’s funny to ride past long rows of backed up cars.
– The ATM isn’t very viewable from a standing position, likely because of a polarizer to make the display more viewable in sunlight.
– Being on a bike puts your head at head level of as a typical mid-size SUV driver. This is good for making eye contact.

I’m contemplating getting a skull cap and something to keep my ears warm while riding, but that costs money and I don’t think (hope?) that the sub-40F cold will last much longer.

Also this episode of This American Life, Episode 352: The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar is particularly good. I listened to it while showering (yes, a long shower) and then burned a copy to disc for my grandparents to listen to.

Winter Cycling

56 minutes, 8.1 miles, most of that through snow, about 1/4 of that through snow-covered fields and front lawns where people don’t have sidewalks.

I’m a bit winded.

Only bottomed out once, where a pile of snow along the edge of a curb dropped about 16 inches to the road, and I got stuck on it.

Leader?

I really think that the image in this post might be a leader connecting with the actual bolt of lightning itself. I’m going to email someone at a university (not sure who) yet to ask.

I checked the other photos taken just after that when I was trying to get the brightness of the sky right (and missing one other strike) and I don’t see anything like water on the lens.

Lightning

Lightning on 24-Aug-2007.

1) Photographing lightning by hand is hard.

2) I’m not sure why the lightning has a hole in it. Either I was really lucky and caught something weird, or it’s water or some other object on the lens. I think it’s probably the latter, even though I’d really prefer the former. I also have never seen water distort in a way which would distort that way, I don’t think. Opinions?

Now that the storm has passed and sirens have stopped sounding I can go to Costco and then get some Thai.

Screen Door

Front door screen retainer.

There are a few times each year which sticks in my mind. The first time the furnace has to be turned on (and the accompanying burnt dust smell). The first snowfall which makes it too difficult to go somewhere. The first day so hot that one must retreat to the cold of the basement.

Growing up I remember this day as the time when my dad (and eventually I) would open my bedroom window, slide the glass panes out of the way, and slide the screen into place. That was also the amazing day where there would be nothing in the window and I could lean out, looking straight down at the ground. This was also the day when my dad would get the screens for the front and side storm doors out of the rafters of the garage, replace the screen material (if needed), remove the glass from the doors, and replace them with screens.

After this point all the doors and windows could be opened and the finally-warm Michigan wind would blow through, airing out the house from months of being closed up against the cold.

Today is that day.

Moon’s Milk

Halo around the moon.

As and I were heading out the door of my house earlier today I noticed a rather pronounced halo around the moon. I didn’t take a picture of it at the time, but after returning to my house I noticed that it was still around and a good bit more visible, so I grabbed the camera and fired off a few shots.

I don’t have a wide enough lens to get the whole halo (the Tokina 12-24 would have been great about now), but I did get a fair bit of it. After seeing the blinding glare of the moon I went to take another photo with something (me?) blocking out the moon, but it was too late and the halo was gone.

So, there you go. Not a great photo, but it’s a halo none the less. I just hope I get to see another 3-4 ring halo like I did one night when I was little. That was amazing.

Wow. Snow.

Woah, snow!

I sure didn’t expect to find that when I looked outside after walking upstairs. Looks like this area has received it’s first substantial snowfall. Yes, there was the weird squall a month or so ago, but that melted within an hour.

Actually, looking further, the all of this area is forecasted to get a good bit of snow.

I think tonight, after I’m done with some electronics work, will involve a bunch of hot Thai curry and a nice beer for dinner.

Oh, on a side note, would any of you be interested in buying my USB oscilloscope? It seems that I don’t need it. I want US$150 for it, shipped to anywhere in the world, via First Class mail (aka Airmail). Photos of it can be seen here (photo gallery retired).

Kinda Foggy

Yes, I’m randomly posting photos today. I just noticed that it was a bit foggy out and… yeah. Normally I don’t get to play in the fog unless it’s early morning, so this was a nice change of pace.
