Oh, all email and websites hosted off of bornslippy.nuxx.net is down right now. I don’t know what’s wrong… The machine will return pings sporadically, and every once in a while just become available. It’s not a DDOS, and ofdoom, located on the same switch, is just fine. Something wonky… I’ve got a call in with the ISP asking them to reboot the box, so hopefully things will be back up soonish.

And yes, this is the same stuff I was seeing yesterday. I *thought* it was a runaway copy of PHP, but it looks like I’m wrong… The first thing to try? A reboot.

Okay… bornslippy.nuxx.net is having problems. I’m not sure what’s going on yet, but it’ll receive email, you can check email, but I can’t ssh in nor hit it via http. Thus, I have no way of looking at it remotely.

Still digging… Worst case I’ll ask the onsite people to smack the reset button.

UPDATE: It seems that someone is heading into the facility later today and will reset the server for me. Uggh. Hopefully a few hours and it’ll all be back…

UPDATE TWO: Things are back to normal. I *think* that PHP being called by a new version of Gallery that I installed was causing hell. No idea why… I was able to SSH in, though, and things are just fine now. Now I just hope that the person at the colo doesn’t go ahead and reboot the server like he was going to. Eek!

Well, it’s done. I think that the box has been sealed, BIOS settings tweaked, and the base OS set on what will be the new webserver, bornslippy.nuxx.net, is built. Hopefully it’ll go live within the week, but for now, feel free to look at some pictures of it. You’ll actually be accessing the new box itself, as I’ve got it running here at my house, but it’s still on my cable modem. Hopefully it’ll go in on Wednesday or Thursday. I hope. :D

UPDATE: Yeah, I did something dumb and deleted all my websites. I’m replacing them now. I need to pay more attention next time I mess around with rsync. dumb dumb dumb. If the photos aren’t available when you check, try in a few minutes.

UPDATE TWO: All fixed. I upgraded Gallery to a more secure version, too. Yay!

Well, that’s it. My home file/web server has been shut down. Everything that was on the 80GB disk and the contents of the websites are being copied off. Fairly soon the server will be mostly disassembled, I’ll attempt to do the weird vinum install, then decide if I need the hot-swap RAID stuff.

All, this isn’t all that important, but it looks like I’m going to be moving dingleberrypie.com out of it’s current place and into a full-out colocated server. As part of this, I need to get the server built, configured, secured, etc. So, for a while, dingleberrypie.com will be down. That means no recipes, photo galleries, etc. I’ve also got a bunch of server-moving work ahead of me tonight.

Let’s see… The file/web server will get parted out to become the new colocated server and the file server. The firewall will be moving back to it’s old Gateway 2000 pizza box. Either a second pizza box or the file server will become the new file server, depending on if I can get an external SCSI enclosure or not.

These decisions will come tonight. :D I also need to play with using Depenguinator to set up a vinum-mirrored disk set, per ‘s recommendation. I’ve got it mostly working here under VMware, but Depenguinator doesn’t come with the vinum lkm, so I’ll have to get things working.

This should be a really, really interesting trip. But, with any luck, I’ll finally be running my own, legal, publically accessable web/mail server.

meep.

Lots done around here today. First off, I change the firewall. Went from OpenBSD 3.3 to 3.4, to a Celeron 300a (at 450Mhz), new NICs, the works. Hopefully this will cut down on the outages I’ve been having. Big problem with this, though, is my public interface IP changed. It’s now 68.60.146.109. DNS changes have been put into place, and we’ll see how things go. Over the last week I’ve also finished adding entries to the recipes section. As I get more that I commonly use, I’ll add them, but that’s all for now.

Spent a bit of time today updating dingleberrypie.com. Most of the work was behind the scenes stuff. I’ve still got some more scheduled jobs to work on, including a problem with automated log rotation, where I want to be sure that the logs don’t rotate out before stats run against them, etc. Also, hopefully I’ll get around to adding properly done mail support so that I can transfer nuxx.net over as well. It’d be so much nicer… Although I do get a lot of spam… That could be kinda high traffic. MRTG should allow me to visualize this, though.

· Need to get MRTG running…

· Need to read Life with Qmail get qmail running…

· Need to lock down /admin in some fashion or another…

I’m thinking of moving nuxx.net to being hosted straight out of my house. All I’ll be doing is mail and the current amount of web hosting that I am now, namely /gallery and random stuff in /images and /pdf. The only thing I could think is that it might be good not to do my own primary DNS, that way if my IP changes it’ll be real easy to point things to the right place. We’ll have to see… If I have time after the blind install I’m going to watch Powaqqatsi while working on getting exim or sendmail, apache, php4, random imap or pop3 server, and bind running on golgotha (the file server). Or maybe bind should go on the firewall itself… Or maybe djbdns… I’m so confused! heh.

safe_mode 1

Hrm. It seems I may have broken part of the web space at my new host. Well, not broken per say, but close. I tried installing Gallery with safe_mode turned on. It allowed me to create a gallery, but it promptly broke itself and left a directory that I don’t have access to hanging out there. That might not be so bad, but safe mode keeps even a PHP-based file manager from deleting it. I uploaded one and tried. I figured if it was running as the same user as created it (whatever Apache user) it’ll be able to delete the file. Wrong. If the host is willing to turn off safe_mode everything will go fine, otherwise I’ll be looking for another host that offers a bit more flexability as far as server configuration goes. This place is great so far, but some things seem limiting. I’d also like to direct gallery.nuxx.net to nuxx.net/gallery, but I think that will take some work as well. If it’s possible here…
