Bird Feeder and Flower Woes

Broken Open Bird Feeder

A while back I got an upside down-style bird feeder to replace my previous one, as the old one was causing too much of a mess. Well, today I came home and found holes in the new feeder torn open and the seed spilled all over the ground.

I guess everything is just conspiring to keep me from having a bird feeder.

Additionally, some large bird has solidly soiled my window, and for some reason (heat? pests which I can’t see?) the salvia planted in front of my house is dying.

Arraugh. Maybe it’s because I ate some bacon.

yep..bacon. Are those bullet holes? Or just a really aggressive woodpecker? weird. You salvia looks like it’s heat stressed and/or dry. I’ve got zinnias and moss rose growing in small planter boxes in the front that just love the heat but they do need to be watered daily.

The salvia is definitely wet enough. It started to get that way over the weekend when it was getting really hot out, and the soil was still definitely moist. I’m going to blame the heat, I think.

And no, those aren’t bullet holes. The feeder has small holes intended for finches to gently remove the seeds while hanging upside down from the metal poles. (Like This — They really do that.)

However, I think some larger birds arrive, peck the hell out of the holes, and break the feeder open. With the thistle being as small as it is, it all then spills out. :(

I’m tempted to try making a metal one.

Blame squirrels. They’re cute, but they chewed up my bird feeder like that, too.

I don’t know how they could get to it, though. And I’ve never before seen them on it…
