Best Buy Woes
So, for the last while the MENU button on my iPod has been intermittantly non-responsive. I can’t help but think that this is a systemic problem with the third generation iPods, partially leading Apple to switch to mechanical buttons (via a rocker wheel) on the latest iPods.
Regardless, I have a four-year warranty for my iPod through Best Buy. I took the device in today to see if they’d swap it, and while the “tech” had the problem happen to him, he noted that it “wasn’t happening anymore” after the first problem with it. Based on that, he determined the iPod wasn’t having problems anymore. He offered to send it out to the repair center for 3-4 weeks to see what they could do… Well… That’d be nice, not having an iPod for 3-4 weeks.
I had been hoping that the “tech”, after having it demonstrated to him that the button occasionally fails to work, would realize that the device really does have issues and get it replaced with a new one. Best Buy’s support isn’t going to be able to repair a capacitive switch that occasionally fails after the device has been sitting for a few minutes.
that sucks. from what i hear and read, its seems as though alot of people still have troubles with i-pods. im still a bit scared to buy one after hearing about button problems and short battery life.
Actually, the short battery life thing you are hearing about is crap. The battery on mine is still great, and the only cases I hear of with regards to people truely having short battery life are from those who barely charge them.
My problem is actually related to button design, and it’s been remedied by… well… not having that kind of button anymore.
Part of the reason why I want it replaced is so I can get a new one… I’ve got the warranty, and it allows for such replacements to happen, so I’d like them to act on it.
that makes me fell a little better. some time this next year i might go and get one. my MD walkman is nice, but the sony software sucks my butt. its so hard to put anything on it that i dont use it half the time.
I’d highly suggest getting an iPod… I would suggest getting AppleCare instead of any other warranty, though. And if you can somehow float a student discount (just order via phone and tell them you go to Macomb) and you’ll be fine.
the center button does the same for me time to time – i want to put it to sleep and it just won’t do a damn thing. i think that is the major problem with all the 3rd gens, and why they went to click wheel.
hopefully mine doesn’t crap out, as i have no fancy schmancy warantee person. i have never been one for those, but considering how much of my stuff has crapped out lately, maybe i should learn…
Uggh, yeah… That sounds like a similar issue. :\
The reason I got the warranty is because it was only around $20-some, and at the time Apple didn’t offer AppleCare on iPods. I figure that the device will die at some point during the four years of the warranty, so it’d be worthwhile. I’d like to get it all sorted out before I think about selling it on eBay. It’s not a huge problem, as a couple of touches usually take care of it, but it’s irritating none the less.
By the way, what did you ever do about your CF issues from the other day?
drop it in the bath, let it dry and take it to a different Best Buy claiming no knowledge of why it isnt working anymore.
Heh. Water is way too obvious… I would do something more like heavy disc access while I tap it on the desk over and over, all while it is wrapped in a wash cloth to prevent nicks. But that’d be dishonest, and I have a hard time being dishonest. :\
well you paid extra to have this type of stuff covered. might as well get your money’s worth
Yeah, but I’m not going to go intentionally damaging the item just to make a warranty claim. That just smacks of bad karma to me.
well since they are taking advantage of you by telling you its not broken enough, bad karma for them, then
