Mail Suggestion
[Crossposted to
So, I need a suggestion…
See, I normally use a number of different email addresses to handle things like mailing lists, LJ, ebay, online ordering, etc. This works out great, as Mail.app (the Apple mail client I use) does a good job with multiple accounts.
Currently I use POP3 at home set to download the mail, and delete it 5 days later. When away from home I check mail with Squirrelmail, which uses IMAP. This setup allows me to access my last week of email remotely, with everything being available and archived at home.
I also will send email from these accounts, especially the admin one, my personal one, the lists one, and the ordering one.
I would like to switch everything around so I have a single IMAP account which I log into with both Squirrelmail and Mail.app. Inbound email will get forwarded to the IMAP account, then filtered into folders based on each account / mailing list / mail type / spam / whatever. This part is easy. Procmail seems to make this trivial.
Here’s where I’m running into a problem… From time to time I will need to send email using an account other than the main IMAP one.
Does anyone know of an easy way to do this? The only way I’ve had to do this in the past is to use Eudora and set up an account with only the outgoing address and SMTP server set. I don’t believe you can do this under Mail.app nor Thunderbird. So… Any other ideas?

So there’s this coffee shop on the way to work, right in Utica, called The Daily Grind. All over the store and it’s cups I see this “Coffee For Independent Thinkers” logo, so I decided to look into it. Well, it seems that this is the branding of CrimsonCup, a distributor specifically designed to work wtih independent coffee shops. Well, that’s good… The first coffee place to open directly on my way to work happens to be independently owned. Not bad.
It’s interesting, I live in Shelby Township and I have to go at least 3/4 of a mile out of my way to get to any of the (numerous) Starbucks. Thusly, I’d almost never go.
:D
Ahh, nothing like a good old February car wash to brighting the spirits. There is something I rather enjoy about sitting in the self-serve car wash bay all bundled up, spritzing the wheels with Simple Green (it does a great job on brake dust when it’s too cold to scrub), soaping the car up with the brush, then cleaning it off with the pressure washer. Sure, it doesn’t look as great as it would in the summer, but at least all the salt and such is off…
…for a few days, at least.
Winter Morning in Michigan

While this wasn’t taken with a dSLR, I figured some people might be interested in it. This was taken Monday morning, just out in front of my condo, showing a nice February morning in Michigan. The density of ice fog just amazes me, and with the sun just barely up, everything had a wonderful blue glow to it.
For what it’s worth, this was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 5400 and hand held. I wish I’d gotten more shots that morning, but I’ve only got the piece of demo CF that came with the camera. With any luck the new 1GB piece will be here tomorrow. I should have had it sooner, but Amazon delayed half of the order… < grumble > Fortunately ZipZoomFly has the same Lexar Professional 80x 1GB pieces for $100, with free second-day FedEx.
BIND?
Does anyone who reads this have a preference for a web-based BIND administration tool? I’m kinda sick of editing zone files by hand.
Amazon Prime
I’m not sure what I think of this… Amazon is now offering Amazon Prime, where you pay US$79/year, and all your shipments are sent from Amazon with two-day shipping for free. Well, free after the US$79/year.
I think that this could actually be a boon to people who order a lot of things from Amazon… I’m considering signing up myself, then ordering all my CDs and DVDs from there. Typically I don’t order because I don’t want to pay for quick shipping, and I don’t want to order enough things to get free shipping. Also, free shipping has a bit of a wait.
Thinking about it, one can figure that this would be a flat-rate $2 for second day shipping on your first 40 items. This is a good price if one orders that much stuff from Amazon.
I wonder if I really would order more stuff from Amazon. I think I would, as Amazon’s prices are almost always cheaper than other local alternatives for music and DVDs.
Hmm…
Blood Orange

Well, I’m feeling especially post whoreish tonight.
After the earlier meal, I decided that I needed a bit of dessert. I haven’t been eating many fresh fruit and vegetables, so when I was at Nino Salvaggio‘s earlier in the evening to get dinner’s ingredients, I ended up picking up a blood orange. Having never had one before, I wasn’t so sure what to expect, so I got the camera ready. Well, I wasn’t disappointed…
This orange has a surprisingly deep red color to it’s flesh, and a somewhat sour, almost pink grapefruit-y taste. Very good, and a very nice alternative to standard naval oranges. I’d highly recommend them. :)
!!!
OH YES!
For the first time in my life I have found ***real*** smoked salmon around here.
See, back when I was in Alaska for a while, Kate’s dad would smoke salmon almost once a week. Well, the resulting product was a deep pink/red color, dry, and extremely flavorful. Not this crap pink slime you see at most stores.
Well, tonight when I was at Nino Salvaggios I managed to find some salmon that looked similar. It’s Alaskan salmon (read: not farmed), nice and dry, and with flavor. I happened to get the cajun variety, so it’s got a bit of a spicy bite, but it’s absolutely amazing!
I might finally eat smoked salmon again!
OxyClean
You know, OxyClean is probably my new favorite cleaner. Not any of the special OxyClean products, but the plain old original stuff. It’s basically sodium percarbonate and nothing else. I’ve been a fan of using tri-sodium phosphate as a non-surfactant detergent, but the phosphates are really bad for ground water and lakes and stuff. Well, sodium percarbonate seems to work equally well, and is now available in retail stores. Yay!
I decided to give it a try after using a beer brewing cleaner called B-Brite. It made water feel like it had TSP in it, so I pulled the MSDS. Well, what do you know… sodium percarbonate. Now I just use that stuff instead.
Also, since I have rather oily skin, my pillow cases and such tend to get a little discolored and stuff, just from oil on my shaved head getting in there. Since sodium percarbonate is a great degreaser, throwing some in with your laundry takes care of skin oils on sheets, towels, clothing, everything. It just works well.
Hmm, you know, I’m starting to suspect that Simple Green is sodium percarbonate in water with color and scent.
