So there’s this coffee shop on the way to work, right in Utica, called The Daily Grind. All over the store and it’s cups I see this “Coffee For Independent Thinkers” logo, so I decided to look into it. Well, it seems that this is the branding of CrimsonCup, a distributor specifically designed to work wtih independent coffee shops. Well, that’s good… The first coffee place to open directly on my way to work happens to be independently owned. Not bad.
It’s interesting, I live in Shelby Township and I have to go at least 3/4 of a mile out of my way to get to any of the (numerous) Starbucks. Thusly, I’d almost never go.
I think they have one of those in East Lansing too.
I hate that there are no coffee places along my route to work. The closest is the Coffee Beanery at Woodward and 9 Mile if I happen to take Woodward in to the city – but the last few times I’ve been there the coffee has sucked. So it’s office java for me…
Oh, blah. Yeah, that’s not good… Nor is office coffee. Hehe. I sometimes am able to hit up a Starbucks at Rochester and Auburn, but that’s still out of the way. :\
Our office coffee isn’t too terrible. My department pitches in and we buy our own good beans, so at least it’s not stale Maxwell House grounds in one-shot packets. Still, it’s not a Starbuck’s latte either…
Hehe… Yeah, that stuff is shit. Robusto beans are absolute garbage, and it’s what most cheap coffees are made from. Here we go one step worse… Aramark-brand coffee.
It’s actually not that bad if you take time to wash the brew basket, brew head, and completely wash the pot, but that almost never happens. In fact, I think I’m the only person who actually does it.
yay! coffee on the way to work goodness! plus the independent ones are usually better than the corporate one.
i bet within a year or two there are going to be more and more Starbucks options, and they’ll have drive thrus, too.
if you ever get a chance, make sure to go to a Starbucks coffee tasting (i think
sherdeb calls them a “cupping.” we did one with the Jaycees last fall, and i learned a *TON* about the company that i didn’t know, even with her working there for over three years. yeah they’re huge and corporate, but they’re not all that evil.
Actually, there are lots of Starbucks in the area already, so I don’t really think they will put one in the exact route I drive.
And about the coffee thing… Cupping is the standard term for a coffee tasting. Typically one puts grounds in a cup, pours boiling water over them, then slurps up some of the coffee with a liquid. It’s really tasty.
And yeah, I know they actually aren’t that bad… Part of my problem with Starbucks is the morning crowd of people getting lots of ridiculously complex drinks. It makes getting a latte take a few minutes. That, and the lack of calories, is a big part of why I often get plain black coffee. It also tastes good.
And, Starbucks tends to have really tasty coffee.
their coffee always tastes burnt to me. That’s why I generally get a latte if I have to get Starbucks.
We have a “daily grind” where I live, too. But not a starbucks…Although We’re getting one. Random post.
Daily Grind seems to be a fairly common name for coffee shops… Sort of like Second Cup. Well, Second Cup is trademarked in Canada, I believe.
