Cypress PSoC

Cypress PSoC ExpressEval Kit (CY3210-PSoCExpEVK)
(Click for more photos…)

Thanks to LJ’s new AJAX-ness breaking and the built-in autosave stuff failing, I just lost what I wrote here. So, I’ll try again:

Upon arriving home from work today I found a small box on the porch. Upon opening it I remembered that last week I had ordered a eval kit for Cypress’ PSoC Express. I had figured that it would just be a CD or something, but it turned out to be a lot more. What I received is the package you see above, containing two CY3210-PSoCEVAL1 boards, a CY8C29446 PSoC, a CY8C27443 PSoC, a 9V battery, cables, jumpers, and everything else one could need for getting familiar with PSoCs.

Thus far I have to say that I’m pretty impressed with PSoC Express. It’s a bit clunky to work with, but in a few minutes I was able to bang together a blinking LED, the turning on/off of LEDs at various positions on a pot, latching an LED on or off with each button press, etc. It’s really quite nifty.

If you’re interested in seeing more photos of the eval kit, take a look here: Cypress PSoC ExpressEval Kit (photo gallery retired)

If you’d like one, they can be acquired from Cypress’ Get PSoC site.

Lens For Sale

Anyone interested in buying my Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM? I’m asking US$500 for it, along with the EW-73B hood and two filters, a Hoya slim circular polarizer and Tiffen UV. (The UV filter was generally kept on the lens to help mitigate damage, were the lens to be bumped or dropped.)

The lens was purchased by me at the very end of last year along with my Canon 20D. As I’ve acquired a new lens which overlaps the usefulness of this one, I’ve decided to sell it.

It has never been dropped, is in excellent condition, and works great. I simply don’t need it any more.

It’ll likely go up on eBay within a day or so if I don’t hear from anyone, so please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks!

UPDATE: It’s now on eBay, along with the hood: 290038467858 & 290038468779

Mail.app IMAP Folder Display Bug

Anyone want to see a bug in Mail.app v2.1 (752/752.2)? Here: mail_imap_single_subfolder_bug.mp4

In short, I have two folders under INBOX (in this case .Logs and .Other) which aren’t defined as special folders (.Sent, .Drafts, .Junk, and .Trash are being used as special folders in Mail.app). If I delete one of them, in this case .Other, suddenly .Logs is no longer visible.

In short, if there is one folder besides the ‘special’ ones off of INBOX, it won’t be shown. And yes, I’ve confirmed that the folder is subscribed. Pointing SquirrelMail or Thunderbird at the account shows all folders as expected.

This is with Courier-IMAP 4.1.1 running on FreeBSD 6.1.

And yes, this has been reported to Apple as Problem ID 4764544.

Blueberry & Plain Cider
(Click for more Blueberry Cider photos…)

Just a quick photo to show off my blueberry cider (photo gallery retired). And yes, it is made with socks. ;)

Hopefully I’ll be able to bottle it in about a month, then it’ll be drinkable around three weeks after that. When putting it in the carboy (the large glass bottle seen above) it had a nice, apple-y, bitter, sweet berry taste to it. With any luck this will continue, and with carbonation the taste will lighten up even more.

I’m really looking forward to this cider.

Oh, and the plain one (shown there for comparison) which only has honey in it should be ready around the same time. Mmm. Hopefully this will be a lot better than last year’s cider.

bsd tar

Can any of you tell me why the following matches no files (and thusly won’t back things up?

tar -czP --include '*.sh' -f /home/telematic/backup/`date +"%Y-%m-%d_scripts.tar.gz"` /usr/local/sbin

This is with BSD tar, and there are files matching *.sh under there. In fact:

root@rowla:~telematic/backup# find /usr/local/sbin -name "*.sh"
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-katester.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-c0nsumer.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-rekram.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-sithspawn.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-nuxxfriends.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-tnorman.sh
/usr/local/sbin/fastcgi/fastcgi-secure.sh
/usr/local/sbin/automysqlbackup.sh
/usr/local/sbin/webalizer_daily.sh
/usr/local/sbin/dailybackup.sh
/usr/local/sbin/lighttpd-hash.sh
root@rowla:~telematic/backup#

So, uhm… What am I doing wrong?

Kinda Foggy

Yes, I’m randomly posting photos today. I just noticed that it was a bit foggy out and… yeah. Normally I don’t get to play in the fog unless it’s early morning, so this was a nice change of pace.

Magnesium!

75′ of Magnesium Ribbon, purchased via eBay
(Click for more Magnesium photos…)

The coil of magnesium I mentioned a little while back showed up today. It’s just as I expected. And yes, I’ve already burned a small piece of it. I’d forgotten just how brightly that stuff burns.

Today has been pretty busy thus far, too. First I mostly finished up the blueberry cider (photo gallery retired), transferring it from the fermenter to the carboy for aging. Before making this transfer I pressed the remaining juice from the berries using a Italian fruit press a friend loaned to me. It worked very well, leaving a bowl of pressed, almost-tasteless, raisin-looking blueberries in its wake.

I’ve got pretty high hopes for this cider. Compared to the plain cider + honey I made a few weeks earlier it has an amazingly deep purpleish color, and its taste is just great. Sort of a tart apple/berry mixture with a hint of alcohol taste. With another month of aging and carbonation I think it could end up being a really nice beverage.

When I pulled the lid on the fermenter I got to see something which looks more like dirty socks floating in the brew. Those are actually natural cotton sacks which I put the berries into (well, most, I accidently dropped a few) to make collecting them for later pressing easier. It seems that most of the yeast grew while attached to them as well, as there wasn’t really much left in the bottom of the fermenter.

Also, here is a picture of Danielle, taken by looking in the wrong end of a pair of binoculars while she stood at the other side.

Now, I think I’ll go acquire some Thai food, or something of a similar nature. Tomorrow will be spent troubleshooting the Casio SK-1 MIDI Mod I assembled today and am having issues with. And doing laundry. And maybe finishing up some things with the webserver. I’m not sure where the problems with the SK-1 thing lies yet, but I haven’t tried much troubleshooting either. Anyway, yes. Food.

DreamHost

DreamHost Cancelation
(Click for full res image…)

In case any of you are interested, the process for canceling an account with DreamHost is completely automated. In fact, it’s easier than signing up for the account in the first place. When canceling the site simply calculates whether or not it has been more than 97 days since signing up for the account and if not, automatically supplies a refund.

Maybe they get quite a few of these or something.

Anyway, I’m (obviously) going to wait a few days to be sure things go through as expected with the credit card company, but this is definitely a bright spot in this whole ordeal with DreamHost.

Oh, and yes, all sites are now on rowla.nuxx.net at the wonderful host which is Waveform Technology Inc, LLC. As long as I can provide a stable, unhacked box for another more than two years I’ll be content.
