Millett Hybrid Maxed: Complete

My Completed Millett Hybrid Maxed
(Click for my write-up…)

Well, I finally (mostly) finished my brief writeup / overview of my building of the Millett Hybrid Maxed tube-based headphone amplifier. It covers info about the parts I used, including knobs, case, jacks, plugs, etc. I also wrote up a bit about the issues I experienced in building it.

I still have to add thermal information and maybe a section covering current requirements powering on from cold, etc. Still, as it is things are pretty complete.

Also, my x0xb0x sold for $890 last night, to someone in Australia. Turns out that person knows the person in Oz who I helped build up the MIDIbox SID-NUXX. DIY synth stuffs really is a small world. Now I just need to wait for the MemX expansion for my P3 to arrive so I can install it and then list the P3 up on eBay.

MIDIbox SID-NUXX CAD Files Pulled

You all remember the MIDIbox SID-NUXX, right? Well, as I mentioned previously someone was selling something with a board of mine in it.

I posted about this here at the MIDIbox forums to inform people of it and hopefully get some assistance. (You’ll have to read the whole thread to get it. It is initially supportive.)

So, what happened after the posting? I’ve been essentially shouted down and told, both in private email, private forum messages, and normal forum messages that it’s my fault that it happend, and I am wholly responsible for the problem and for stopping it. I don’t quite understand this response, as I spent a bunch of time and money putting a new design in place, licensed the portions of it which I created properly (creative commons, non-commercial, share alike), and then gave it all away for anyone to use. Net cost? Probably around $1K out of pocket and a bunch of time.

At this point I’ve tried contacting eBay, who has told me that the claim about the board in there being my IP is “uncertain” and not yet replied when I provided additional info. I asked for help from the community and was told that it’s my problem and I owe it to them to fix it. I’ve talked to the seller both via eBay and direct personal email (Flavio Mireles) and he’s played dumb. I’ve even tried bidding it high myself on eBay both with my personal account and sockpuppet accounts, and those bids have been cancelled. (Probably because the person saw new users and then my username in the bidding.)

I’m not sure what else I can do at this point, so I’ve gone ahead and pulled all the real-value contributions I made down. That is, the PCB CAD files, photoplotter/drill files (Gerbers and Excellon drill files), MIDIbox SID-NUXX-specific software binaries, all of that. I made something, spent a lot of money doing so, and tried to give it all back to the community. Unfortunately I’ve now been told that I gave too much back, and that my “forking”†† of the project does nothing but benefit “profiteers”.

The project has basically been closed since and finished their boxes. Other people (folks from Germany, Canada, California, and Australia) have built them since then with my help, but I haven’t done any more work on the project itself. At this point I’m just giving up on it. Sorry, I thought I was doing with sharing everything was right.

eBay emailed me at 16:29 EDT, I replied with info about the licensing of the board, postings about it in a public space, and links to photos of the board at 16:36. It’s now 01:08 the following day.
†† I don’t get how doing one alternate version, contributing all changes back, then terminating the project is forking.

IP Enforcement and eBay

Well, it looks like reporting an eBay listing which infringes on one’s copyright is a little more difficult than I thought:

If you have a good faith belief that a listing on eBay infringes your copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property rights, all you need to do is download our Notice of Claimed Infringement (NOCI) form, fill it out, and fax it to eBay.

From: Reporting Intellectual Property Infringements (VeRO)

I’ve got the form all filled out. I’ll fax it off tomorrow morning if I don’t hear back from the seller.

IP Enforcement

I’ve never found myself in the position of having to enforce my own IP this way, but I guess that now I do. See, earlier today I came across this post on Matrixsynth about someone selling a SID 6581-based synth on eBay (this auction) . Looking more closely at it, it has one of my MIDIbox SID-NUXX Mainboard PCBs in it.

The licensing for this board is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5, so it can’t be resold. (This was mostly because I used a non-profit version of some software for it and thusly have a responsibility to ensure that it isn’t used for for-profit work.)

I’ve messaged the seller with this:

Hey there... This is Steve, the guy who designed the MIDIbox SID-NUXX board used in there. I'm not sure if we've talked before about your implementation of the board, but I wanted to tell you that the license of that board specifically forbids commercial sale of the design. This is licensed this way because of the non-profit license used for the software with which I designed the PCB.

I'd like to sort this out without disputing the auction via eBay, so please contact me directly at c0nsumer@nuxx.net. Thank you.

-Steve

I’ve also emailed the person who runs Matrixsynth to see if they know the identity of the seller. I also made this post on the MIDIbox forums.

There are a few people who I sent MIDIbox SID-NUXX PCBs to for free. I’m wondering if this is one of those guys… If so, it’s kinda dickish of him to sell off something he was given. If he is someone who had a run of PCBs made himself, he’s most definitely violating the license under which I released the boards.

(None of this above even touches on the reselling of the software contained on there, which TK, the guy who writes all the MIDIbox stuff, generally forbids.)

Millett Hybrid Max, MIDIbox SID-NUXX, M-Audio MIDIspot 2×2

/me grins hugely.

Yes, I’m a dork.

(Now, if I could only get SIDPLAY to feed the SID data to MIDI properly / at the right speed, or ASID XP to not glitch when alt-tabbing between other windows.)

x0xb0x Auction

My x0xb0x auction will go live tonight. I plan on emailing the folks at matrixsynth about it, posting to the ladyada.net forums, and mentioning it here.

Do any of you have suggestions for other sites who might be interested in linking to the auction?

Also, I have the same question about marketing the P3. I’ll post to the aforementioned sites, and also the Sequentix P3-related Yahoo group. Any other ideas for where else to market it once that auction goes live?

I don’t want to linkspam, I just want it listed where people who are actually into that sort of thing may see it.

(I’ll post the auction links here, of course, once they are live. The x0xb0x will go at 10:30pm EDT tonight, the P3… after I get the auction written. Probably Tuesday night, or so.)

Thanks very much…

x0xb0x #496 For Sale

One other thing… I’m going to sell the x0xb0x I finished back in June, #496. Seeing as the last x0xb0x on eBay went for $845, I think it’s worth selling this one now. After all, I basically built it to sell.

If anyone is interested in snatching it up before it hits eBay, please let me know.

Oh, and if I can ask folks for a bit of help, here is the current draft of my x0xb0x auction. I’m pretty certain it’s complete, I’m just curious if some of you could skim it and see if it needs any drastic changes. I’m not looking for perfect grammer, case, or amazing thoroughness, just a decently worded auction that doesn’t scare anyone off.

Thanks!
