Tonight when Danielle and I were driving back from my parents’ house while heading west down M-59 towards my house, I just so happened to have a police officer behind me. I don’t think he was following me specifically, he just happened to be behind me in a bit of traffic.
Suddenly, as we approached the Meijer at M-59 and Hayes, a Ford Explorer came flying over the top of one of the 8′ grass berms, airborne, straight at the road. It bounced a couple of times in the easement, turned sharply across the grass just avoiding the road, then took off back into the Meijer parking lot. The police offer understandably headed right into the lot behind them.
We drove around, then back into the Meijer parking lot to see if the person was being detained, but the police officer and the Explorer were gone. I imagine the police followed them out of the lot or something before pulling them over.
While still in the parking lot, after taking the opportunity to once again remove the piles of ice in the wheel well, we had to leave via a carefully chosen entrance. It had to be one plenty far away from the other individuals still in the who were driving full size pickups across the lot at high speeds, then sliding them sideways or backwards for 100′ or so. I was hoping to see of them hit a light pole, a sign, or maybe even a curb sideways and break a wheel or tie rod or something.
Sliding around on the ice is REALLY fun if you have a truck… although it is not responsible to do it when there are other cars/ A ROAD nearby. People tend to get freaked out by it.
We do it in this old Wal-Mart parking lot because it is never plowed and it is set back in a shopping center so you are not near any roads/other people.
But admittedly it is quite fun. If you know what you are doing you/other people are not in any real danger.
I’d believe that, but the parking lot of a 24 hour store where people are coming and going isn’t exactly the best idea. The person in the Explorer was particularly bad, because they launched their vehicle in the air, right at a rather busy road. Sure, it was 1:30am, but it was also a Friday night, and the group of cars I was driving in was at least 10 vehicles.
I agree. People don’t understand why I love it when it snows here. All you need is a Jeep and an empty parking lot and you’re up for a bit of fun. I do have to agree with Steve on one point though, THAT Meijer has people doing that all the time and its stupid considering there are plenty of other parking lots close to there that are empty and free of the chance of hurting innocent folks minding their business. While I don’t wish they hit a pole and hurt themselves either, I would like to see a cop issue a few tickets to curb that behavior in that particular lot.
I can’t really say I’d have a problem with it if it were in a truly empty lot. This just definitely wasn’t, and when a vehicle comes bounding across grass, likely tearing it up (because it hadn’t been below freezing for very long), right at traffic, that’s bad.
I don’t wish anyone get hurt personally, I just wish they’d damage their vehicles enough to make them think twice about what they are doing.
Yeah, you are right. Those people are fucking tools.
I think this type of fun should be reserved for the responsible… in empty lots where there is nothing/no one to damage. People like the driver of that Explorer are fucking morons who think it looks cool but really have no understanding of how it actually works. That dude it definitely going to flip his truck over one day. I can’t say I’d feel sorry for him.
But when the safe opportunity arises for me to do it right… I’m totally in! Last night was probably one of the most fun nights for it this winter.
Driving back past it last night we’d noticed that the tire tracks ran close enough to a tree that the mirror probably hit it. Another 1′ over and the truck would have taken out a 10′ or so decorative tree. I’m sure the 5″ trunk wouldn’t have been too forgiving to the bumper, though.
I know, I agree.
FYI I just did a Steve. My boyfriend had to have general surgery on his arm so I took pics of him cleaning it out and redressing the wound. GROSS! I love it! I did it quick but if the pics came out I’ll lj post it. Ewww. :D
I don’t miss the snow or ice during winter at all. :) My biggest concern during this part of the winter here is if I’m wearing a t-shirt, whether I need to bring a light sweatshirt with me in case the AC is on to high at work, lol
Yeah thats for some people but not me. I love Michigan, love the snow and cold and everything that comes with it. Can’t live without it. At least I know I belong here…when I leave the state I get withdrawals. Call me silly but well….just call me silly.
Neat!
LOL… That Meijer’s is the same where I got my very first job when I was fourteen!
