Aperture v1.1

Just so everyone knows, Apple has released Aperture v1.1 and dropped the price to US$299 (US$149 for students). Everyone who purchased it before at the higher price is eligable for a US$200 e-coupon. (US$100 if EDU was purchased.)

With the educational price being so much lower, I think it’s time that I pick it up. Canon’s DPP is nice, but Aperture seems ideal. Also, Canon has told me that they currently have no information on when a Universal Binary version of DPP will become available.

Hmm, now, do I buy a 4GB memory card (about US$230) for the upcoming UK trip, or do I buy a 2GB and a copy of Aperture? I think Aperture + the 2GB is a better idea…

I’ve been playing with Aperture, and I like it. I’ll probably end up using DPP to download and do the first round of quick management of my photos, then use Aperture for the rest. I am happy with the new price too, means I will probably get around to buying it soon.

The things I dislike about DPP are it’s speed at times, it’s inability to straighten images, and that you can’t really do any cataloging or undoing of changes (except back to the original raw) after the image has been saved.

People over in have been telling me to check out Lightroom, as well.

Have you used Aperture? I couldn’t see spending the money on it at all when I’ve already got the CS2 version of Photoshop.

You do know that they do different things, right?

      1. invader_zins April 13, 2006

nope. I didn’t. The things I read about Aperture made it sound like Apple was trying to make thier own version of Photoshop, and bank some of the money that Adobe was making.

        So what does it do?

        1. c0nsumer April 13, 2006

          Well, for one: http://www.apple.com/aperture

They can say it better than I can. Think of a way to deal with RAW images (obviously) non-destructively in large sets, catalogs, etc. Basic developing tools, such as color correction, straightening / rotation, exporting in other formats, etc.

Kinda like what you can do with Bridge – which comes with PS CS2. ;)

As a fellow Mac nerd.. with my machine dying a slow painful death… how do you feel about the Mini? Unfortunately, if my current G4 croaks sooner rather than later, that’s the only thing I could come up with the money for, and I really don’t want to buy a Windoze machine to hold me over til I was able to purchase a more powerful Mac. Thoughts?

          2. c0nsumer April 13, 2006

Not…. Quite. It’s more like what the Adobe Lightroom product (currently in Beta) does.

If I were you, I’d buy a Core Duo Mac mini with disk and RAM maxed out. Buy it on educational discount, and with mouse and keyboard it’ll cost you right about $1300.

(To get educational pricing, just buy it online and say you go to Macomb Community College in Clinton Township, MI. Apple has no way to check this, and will just send you the order at edu price.)

I was just about to buy one of these when I decided to hold off until the PowerMac replacements come out.

Yeah… I was thinking more along the lines of the $4-500 Mini.

Knock on wood, I very well might have a job lined up, and knock on more wood, this machine will last a few more months (even though it drives me batty), and buying the cheapest Mac I can get won’t be an issue.

I totally bought this one with the education discount. Even if they decided to check, I’ve got a friend who’s a teacher who can prove it who said she’d “buy” it on my credit card.

          4. c0nsumer April 13, 2006

I wouldn’t do that. If you buy a mini which is that cheap, it’s going to have to be one of the refurbished PPC ones. They are fine machines, but the Intel ones are a *lot* faster.

          5. invader_zins April 13, 2006

I’m hoping the antique G4 I’ve got now lasts a few more months. I’ve got a pretty solid job lead, as in I could be starting the week after next.

Keep in mind that my source of income right now consists of odd jobs I’ve been picking up, and competing with the homeless guys at all the down town parking lots & garages to collect trash bags of empties during Red Wing games. That money goes to food and to whichever medical bill is threatening to take me to court at the time.

I’m *really* not in the market for a new machine, but this one is dying… I could probably talk my dad into a couple hundred towards a cheap computer if I really had to, but only because I actually need it to work on the photos I occasionally get paid to take.

What’s wrong with the current one?

          7. invader_zins April 13, 2006

Besides the fact that it’s old (1999) and slower than molasses (I could tolerate slow).

It crashes. Constantly. Sometimes when I’m actually working on a big file in PS, but mostly, for no appearent reason at all. It gets “stuck” when I’m shutting it down. It crashes when I’m starting it up. It crashes when I send an email. It crashes when I look at a text only web site. Someone can IM me, and take the computer by surprise, and kill it. There are times I spend more time rebooting than I do actually using the computer.

I replaced the hard drive about a year ago at the suggestion of my then Mac-repairing friend Alan. It did nothing. I did a few other things he suggested. Nothing. It’s got a GB of RAM in it, which should be plenty (I no longer am fool enough to think I can run more than one program similtaneously). I backed up everything, and erased the HD and reinstalled the OS. That worked for about a week.

Since I’m used to the constant crashing (and I need to hurry up and finish typing this comment before it goes again), I could live with it… but now it’s taken to making the occasional high pitched screechey whiney sound… and there have been times it’s made some weird grinding noises too. I’ve opened it up – nothing is coming loose, the innards are free of cat hair. I’m stumped, and the last time I talked to my friend Alan about it, he even said it was time to buy a new machine.

Do you have access to a student discount? If not, you are more than welcome to use mine.

    1. c0nsumer April 13, 2006

Yep, already ordered. But thanks. :)

      1. bunjamin April 13, 2006

Ok good :) But, if I can ever donate my discount.. ya.

        1. c0nsumer April 13, 2006
