SIDbox

Over the past couple days I’ve been attempting to learn to use CadSoft EAGLE better. I think I’ve come pretty far on it, and I’ve started working on a project that I’ve been wanting to tackle. That is, building a stand-alone SID module. Think of something about the size of an external hard drive, with MIDI IN / THRU / OUT jacks, and a pair of 1/4″ jacks for audio in and out.

Well, I think I’ve gotten pretty far on it. If any of you are interested in seeing the schematic as it stands right now, please take a look here: SIDbox Schematic

Also, if any of you who are a bit more electrically inclined could take a look at the power supply, that’d be really great. I’m not sure it’s right… I think so, but I’m not certain.

For what it’s worth, I’m hoping to feed PWR_TIP and PWR_RING 15VAC from a wall wart.

If the SID is a 8580 (the newer version) instead of a 6581, then I’ll replace the 7812 with a 7809 (since it only needs 9 VDC) and replace a few of the caps in the SID portion.

um….stick some of those Cadbury cream eggs in it?

      Yes. Clearly it needs CCEs.

    a favor…

do you think once in awhile you can just include one extra sentence that explains whatever it is you’re making…for those of us not so inclined to know what all the letters and #’s mean?

I read the posts but I always feel like an idiot b/c I have no idea what these things are or what they do.

      Re: a favor…

      Well, I’m building a stand-alone SID module. A SID is a sound chip from a C64.

        Re: a favor…

        now if only i knew what a c64 was : /

or perhaps what the purpose of a stand alone was? maybe not purpose but why you feel it necessary or why it’s better then whatever else is out there. Maybe a link would help…that way you don’t always have to explain it to me?

I ‘less than 3’ SID 6581’s, and its newer built to Spec (errr… less broken) 8580.

I’ll trade one for a PCB of this when I’m done. Got any to spare? ;)

      (I don’t want to rip into a working C64…)

I have 2 working C64’s… but I would be horrified for them to meet such a fate.

Ah, thanks, but I don’t want to tear into working ones.

I’m currently looking at getting a stand-alone one and a motherboard from eBay. Likely about $5 for the set at this point…

  4. Why this instead of building a midibox sid? Or is it just for the fun of rolling your own?

    1. c0nsumer April 17, 2006

It’s the fun, a good way to learn to use Eagle, and I don’t want two boards, two separate power supplies, etc.

I’m basically taking the MIDIbox SID schematic and rebuilding it on a single, smaller, higher quality board.

This should end up being about the size of a external hard drive once it’s done. maybe 1.5″ x 6″ x 8″.
