E 74

E 74 on my brand new Xbox 360

I just spent about 45 minutes cabling up my brand new Xbox 360. What happens at first power-on? E 74.

I powered it down and then back up and it’s now at the intial setup screens, but still…

Fucking Microsoft.

  1. According to this that’s an AV cable error… how long is your HDMI cable? Have you used your HDMI port with other things? HDMI is a bit of an unreliable standard still…

I’m not actually using HDMI. I’m just using the component cable that came with it, because the HDMI port on the TV is plugged into the upconverting DVD player.

I just turned it off and back on and it’s working. It sure is a noisy console, though. The fan in it sounds like a PC, and the dashboard by default has some rather potent sound effects.

      1. Oh. Hm, maybe the AV cable was just a wee bit loose or something? Weird.

I’m not sure. :\ I just grabbed the picture before touching things, then hit the power button to turn it off. After turning it back on things seem fine.

The initial setup / account creation stuff sure takes a while, though.

Looks like the initial $25 worth of points I plan on picking up will pay for Space Giraffe, Alien Hominid, Geometry Wars, and still have 400 points left over for something else.

I still can’t quite get over the idea of paying for downloads without backup media, though.

          1. Yeah, that kind of irked me about the wii, too. If I pay for a game, I ought to be able to put it on something outside the console for backup!

Thankfully you can re-download things, even if you get a new console. But still, what about in 20 years or so?

I just hope that by then all the downloadable games have been cracked and are being distributed as retrowarez.

That was one of my thoughts too. What happens when the 360 becomes obsolete and they shut XBLA down?

I suppose at least the games are on your HDD.

X360s are notorious for errors. They’re equally notorious for errors that appear once or twice and never again. If it started on the second try, it’s probably okay.
