Joint Stereo
August 21, 2007
I think the reason why I like lossless audio (such as Apple’s Lossless) more than AAC is the better channel separation. I’d say this is due to the lack of joint stereo encoding of some type or another…
Hmm. Clearly I need to learn more about this.
joint stereo sucks, and by default, most mp3 encoders use joint stereo to reduce file size.
It can be turned off as easily as it can be turned back on… its just an option. I turn joint stereo off in all mp3 encoders I use.
Any idea how to do that on the AAC encoder built into iTunes?
And they don’t do it to reduce file size, they use it to better utilize the requested bitrate.
mmkay, I mis-read the statement you said. I thought you were saying that the AAC encoder doesnt do joint stereo. IOW, I thought you were comparing Apple Lossless AND AAC to mp3, instead of Apple Lossless TO AAC. D’oh!
I have no idea how to turn it off for the aac encoder that itunes uses. Most of my permanent collection of electronic music is in mp3 format since that seems to still be the most portable (read: long lasting) compressed format. With the encoder I use, joint stereo is turned off.
I only use AAC for iPod duty.
re: filesize vs bitrate. I obviously mis-spoke but I do believe a net effect of that is reduction of filesize for given bitrate. i.e. 192kbps joint stereo is smaller than 192kbps not-joint stereo. At least I thought that was the end result of the physical files.
I think the filesize and bitrate remains the same, but the audio is better compressed. I need to read about that more.
I’m not sure if AAC does joint stereo of any sort. I need to determine this somehow. I’m having a hard time finding any info on how the encoder built into iTunes works.
*nods*
I will be looking forward to seeing if you find out anything :)
come on!
