Lowel ego

Wow, the Lowel ego looks like exactly the kind of lighting setup I need.

Then again, I could probably make something similar for a bit less… But it at least gives me some ideas. Maybe a nice diffuse lighting kit will be my next project after the in-car iPod mounting and the MAME machine.

I bet a little bit of foamcore to make the oval shape, then some thickish frosted acetate formed around it with a small flourescant light inside should do the trick.

or, you could just get a japanese light from target or ikea, and get the same effect.

Or get a lighting umbrella and just point a spot lamp into it… a $5 clip-on worklamp from lowes with a 100 watt bulb should do the trick

The only thing I’d want is bulbs that are a specific color temperature, but that’s no big deal.

A collapsable silver reflector for the other side, and a nicely made easel for the backdrop and I’d be all set.

Color temperature of the bulb can easily be adjusted using Color Correction gel from Rosco. There’s no reason to let the physical bulb dictate what you’ll see.

Don’t you have to know what the original temp of the bulb is, though? And I was thinking of going with known-temp bulbs to ease color correction in the camera. Although I suppose it would always be best to meter off of a grey card…

well, you can buy replacement bulbs from them for $20… although I’d be willing to bet you that they’re standard fluorescent bulbs. THe picture they show is a screw-in coil type.

besides… color balance can always be tweaked later…. fix it in post!

Hehe, well… I’d rather fix it in camera. ;) But still… That is what white balancing is for, after all.
