So, yeah. In order to better contend with the extra bright light problem here at work I’ve expanded on my previous monitor hood. This still doesn’t solve my problem of having to sit under such bright lights, but at least I can see my monitor better.

Next I think I’ll make an actual wooden one with a nice matte black finish on the inside.

can I ask you something would it be out of line for you to just buy a laptop glare screen and expense it? I think I might have an old one that I can send you :)

No, it wouldn’t at all… The problem is that it’s not glare, but the brightness of the lights which is washing out the colors in the display, making it hard to see. A glare screen won’t resolve that. :\

That’s so stupid they won’t let you turn off the lights. Isn’t it better for the eyes to turn down/off overhead lights and just use a desk lamp? That’s what I heard.

I think it is too… But… Bah, I don’t know. There are also windows that run from 3′ up to the ceilings around the entire building, never any further than 25′ or so from a cube.

maybe try a golf or patio umbrella over your cube?

    1. c0nsumer May 12, 2005

That’s an idea, and with the golf umbrella I could just say I’m drying it… If I make it too permanant facilities will bitch. :(

you could add tiki torches and lighted chili peppers for extra fun!

*shakes head* i have glare issues here at work, too. lighting *and* window placement. thankfully my organization is small enough (plus i sorta kinda am in charge of it!) that i’m going to be making some changes here and there to make things better.

If it looks really obnoxious maybe they’ll relent and let you take the lights out. Maybe you can get your Dr. to write you a drs. note that fluorescent lights give you headaches and you need to not be directly under them for extenede periods of time…lol!

Hehe… I’ve thought about that… Or bringing up some studies about how working under such glaring lights is demoralizing.

Hell, I’ve already wasted a good bit of time making this hood and just generally bitching.

I’d also put a black hood over the back, kinda like the old school cameras. Then make insidious cackles every five-ten minutes or so…

The other solution that I’m working on is a sort of black cloth which happens to cover one corner of my cube. It just might have to be purple velvet.

did you go to the doctor yet? I’d cover the whole top of my cube with cardboard and tell them you’re going to file a complaint if they don’t do something. Start complaining about migraines all the time.

    1. c0nsumer May 12, 2005

Nope, it’s easier to deal with the light than take time to go to the doctor. I’ve been spending lots of time doing other things, anyway…

It’s not like the light give me headaches or anything, I just really don’t like it.
