Uggh.

To make a long story short, I picked up a 512MB SanDisk Ultra II SD card at lunch today. Since I’ve (for the time being) got possession of a regular 512MB SanDisk SD card, I decided to benchmark the two of them. Well, under HDTach, both achieved a straight 1.1MB/sec. Under SiSoft Sandra I got the results detailed above, with the regular card coming in faster than the Ultra II.

I think something is sour with this PCMCIA reader I was using to benchmark them. I think I’ll have to get a USB2.0 reader or something. :\

Help!

I’ve got an idea, and I’m curious if anyone can throw an opinion about it my way.

First off, I have a Kodak DC4800, but it’s getting a bit long in the tooth. I want a new camera, a Nikon D70, but I can’t afford it yet.

So, here’s what I’m thinking of doing…

I should be able to get a Nikon Coolpix 3200 and matching case for ~$158. Rechargable AA batteries for it will run about about $25 with charger, and 512MB of UltraII SD memory $65.99. That makes it about $250 for a new, smaller camera with about the same capabilities as my current one.

The current one should sell for about $125 on eBay, making it all a difference of about $125 for the new camera. This will provide something much smaller and considerably lighter than my current camera, with plenty of memory. Unfortunately the zoom and resolution of this camera is the same as the old one…

Then, sometime next year after saving up a bit, the D75 could be a possibility. This way I’d eventually have a small, more knock-around camera, and a better one for more serious photography.

How does this sound? Does anyone have any suggestions or better ideas?

Thanks!

Flattening Negatives?

Help! Could anyone who reads this who is familiar with photography stuff offer a suggestion? I’ve got some negatives I’m scanning, but despite being stored flat in sleeves for eight years or so, they seem to have a bit of a curl to them. Scanning them is producing a bit of distortion at the end of each negative, as can be seen here.

Does anyone know a good way to go about flattening negatives? I don’t have a tractor drive negative scanner I can feed them into, and the negatives slide into the carrier, not clip in. As such, it’s hard to fully keep them from curling. :(

Digital Cameras

So I’ve been poking around online, attempting to decide which digital camera would be best to upgrade to. I’m personally a big fan of Nikon digital cameras, and I want something smaller than my current Kodak DC4800. It’s a great camera that has served me well, but I think it’s time for something new.

Thus far I’m considering either the Coolpix 4800 or Coolpix 5200. One is 4mp and the other is 5mp, but the 4mp camera has better optics and a much larger CCD. Unfortunately, the 4mp camera is also quite a bit larger and a bit heavier, but it’s still only 9oz (sans battery).

There’s some nice reviews of both of these cameras over at Steve’s Digicams: Coolpix 4800Coolpix 5200

Currently I’m leaning towards the 4800, with a 512MB Ultra II SD card, spare battery, and carrying case. This is all likely to run around $500 total. Sure, there resolution isn’t that improved over my current camera, but hopefully the optics will be a bit better.

That said, is there anyone who would be interested in buying my camera? I’ve got the camera, bag, two batteries, wall charger, power cable, USB cable, TV cable, two CF cards (64MB and 8MB), USB CompactFlash (CF) adapter, a lens cleaner, and a few other bits for it. I’m thinking $150… So, anyone interested?

And before you ask, yes, this is the camera I’ve used to take pictures for the last while. Some of the excellent sample images are here, here, here, here, here, and here.

So, yeah. If anyone’s interested, let me know. It’s a very fair price, and the camera works great. I just want to part with it so that I can afford another one. I’d also appreciate any insight people have into either of those cameras, or preferences for other ones or whatnot. The reason I’m hesitant to get the Coolpix 4800 is it’s physical size. It might not quite be pocket sized… But the smaller CCD in the 5200 is apt to produce noisier images… There’s a sample full resolution 4800 image here and one from the 5200 here.

Price isn’t really too much of a consideration, as the 5200 is only about $30 more than the 4800.

(Odd that I’d go from a DC4800 to another 4800 model. heh.)

Another thing for sale… Is anyone interested in a Netpliance I-Opener? It’s the original version, already hacked, with a 1GB hard drive installed, ready to go, USB network adapter, etc. I’ve also got a mouse/keyboard splitter so that you can use any PS/2 mouse and keyboard with it. Getting the hard drive in there required replacing the heatsink and doing some ninja-type mounting and fitting. It’s definitely not stock, but *is* ideal.

I just want $100 for it… In the original box, also with original keyboard and docs and firmware intact, etc. It works just fine, I just have no need for it anymore.

Otherwise, it’s going up on eBay, too.

Oh, in case you don’t know what one of these is, it’s a single panel computer/display with a modem, USB port, parallel port, etc. Great for running Linux or Windows 98 or whatever else you feel like on it.

For Sale!

Hey everybody… I finally got some things listed on eBay today, so I thought I’d post the links here:

· VNV Nation – Advance And Follow v2 2 – Sealed New
&middot PAiA FatMan Analog Synthesizer – New – Assembled – MIDI

Oh, and yes, that’s the synth I was building a few months ago. It works great and all, but with all musical gear I acquire, I just can’t use it.

Oh, I’ve also got a Xircom PCMCIA 10/100 network card available, if anyone can use it. I’ve got no use for it, so if you’ve got a use for it, let me know.

Yay! FreeBSD is up and running, without any sort of RAID controller. After buying a 3Ware from eBay and having it need *identical* disks, I thought I was sunk. So, I ran out to Micro3000 (thanks, Erik!) and picked up a Promise FastTrak100 TX2. Turns out that this controller only does on-line swaps and rebuilds when using a special Windows driver. Gah! Oh, and manual, off-line rebuilds take forever. It took about an hour and a half to re-sync the mirror after I intentionally broke it. Ah well.

Anyway, to make a long story short, thanks to the wonderful help I received from , I’ve got a working mirrored system, and the know-how to do it again. Now, to get everything configured, test what happens if a disk does die, etc.

Oh, and yes, Erik, I think I will need to return that controller. It just doesn’t work quite how it says on the box. :\ Ah well. Things are good, for now.

Has anyone here used Shutterfly or some other similar online photo printing service? I’ve got a number of Library of Congress Prints and Photos shots that I’d like printed, and I’m thinking it’ll be cheaper and easier to have them printed by a service than do them myself.

I’m curious how the photos looked… It seems that I’m able to only upload JPEGs to Shutterfly, but they were able to accept a 4000 x 5000 7MB high quality JPEG, which should look fine printed.

These will eventually be framed and hung up in various parts of my house, bathroom, etc.

What’s really neat is that the LoC has some nuclear reactor blueprints on their site, and printed at 20 x 30 these could look *really* nice in my living room, surrounded with 1940s – 1960s era electronics.

So, anyone tried Shutterfly or any other printing services?

UPDATE: I think I might order a set of four or five test prints from each Apple/Kodak (via iPhoto), Snapfish, and Shutterfly.

Yay! I stopped at Sears Hardware on the way home and I *finally* have a Vernier caliper. With me being as anal as I am about things being accurate, I can’t believe that I never had one. Now I can finally measure things accurately. No more silly tape measure trying to determine if something is 7/16″ or 3/4″. Heh.
