So, for eight months or so now I’ve seriously considered moving posts from here to an actual hosted blog install. I’ve always been rather against email and photo hosting which I don’t wholly control, so why should I keep a blog here, where I can’t control it?
This post here seems to show how easy it would be to move to a WP install… I might set one up on dingleberrypie or something as a test, just to see how it goes.
I’ve been thrilled with WPMU here at work, so have all of the folks using it. :) I’ve considered moving to an installation on kitschicat.com and blogging there, but I’m still not sure…I’ll have to read that article, it may be the kick in the pants I need! ;)
I don’t really need the multi-user, but I am considering the single.
One thing I really need to do is sort out the management details… Where do I want to host it? Do I do it under nuxx.net, dingleberrypie.com, or something else? I’ve also got nuxxindustries.com/net/org… Do I want the blog as something beneath the main nuxx.net? Do I want to try and theme it, and the gallery, and the blog similarly?
How far does it go? I’m not good at graphics, but I also don’t want anything too standard / templated / colored.
Heh, I saw that and my first thought was “I dunno, I like WordPerfect too but the last version they made is pretty old. You should go to OpenOffice.”
Heh. I still credit learning how the erm… formatting tags or whatever in WP5.1 with helping me understand HTML and other such markup languages.
Also, I don’t like OpenOffice. ;) Maaaaybe I’ll give it another go once there’s a native Mac version, but too many things are missing from Excel for my taste.
do you write in your journal because you think people are interested in what you have to say, or do you enjoy the social interaction?
the social interaction in blogland is _terrible_. also “blogs” have always struck me as pretentious because “bloggers” always assume that people want to read what they’re saying, whereas on LJ you don’t really expect anyone outside of your friend list to read or comment, and when they do it’s a pleasant surprise.
That’s one of the biggest questions I’ve been fighting with, and what could potentially cause me to use a cross-posting plugin. I do enjoy the social interaction, but I also think that some people are interested in the content. Content which isn’t wholly under my control.
I almost think that a good compromise may be to use a cross-posting plugin, leave comments enabled here, disable indexing (Google, et al) of LJ, and maintain whatever minimum account is needed for email reply notifications.
That way I’d get the community here, people would be able to read the content here, and others would be able to read it via more normal means as well. It would also allow me to continue to use LJ for more private posting, if I desire to do so.
I understand what you’re wrestling with. My wife put her blog on our server, and uses OpenID to still comment here. But I’d kindof like to do both, which means me looking at crossposters. Which the WP2LJ ones all seem kind of crufty, but if you find a good one (or if I do), give me a heads up.
Also, I should probably add that almost all of the traffic to my normal site comes from search engines. Lots of my LJ posts also show up in Google (et al) searches because they happen to be shorter, more offhanded writeups than I’d post on my normal site, but are still somewhat topical. I’d think that if the same sort of content were in my ‘normal’ blog posts, the searches would instead go there… It’d also be easier for me to archive everything for long-term storage. A simple dump of the DB would handle it well.
that’s exactly why i’ve started three blog projects and killed them. i like the social interaction & feedback that LJ offers. i’ve also found myself reading blogs and thinking “WHY am i reading this? it’s awful!” and then i realize that most people are probably thinking the same thing about the crap that i’m spewing.
Does that mean we can no longer read your posts?
Not at all. I’m also still trying to figure out what I want to do.
