x0xb0x Artwork Rip-Off

Wow, I just read on Matrixsynth, the synthblogger who posts all he can, that someone is selling x0xb0x artwork based on my design. You can see it’s… unique stylings here.

There is one on eBay for £25 which strikes me as absurd, because more than what I was charging for the artwork, red keycap, and postage to the entire world. Also, they are printed vinyl which tends to delaminate over time.

I guess I don’t care that much, but maybe if I get bored tomorrow I’ll try faxing over the paperwork to eBay to get the auction pulled.

I just can’t get over how ugly / low budget rip-off it is… Wow.

  1. Wow, that’s REALLY ugly. And suprising, given that the same guy generally does good, original work.

    1. Original work? ;) You mean the rip-offs of loads of other synth company’s logos he’s got for sale on Custom Synth?

I think his wood piece / knob / restoration work looks good, but he could learn a bit about leveraging others’ work.

    2. Oh, I just noticed that a bunch of the other stuff he has is original work, sorry.

Maybe it’s because he took my x0xb0x art, around a v1.0, and just slapped a different logo and font on it?

      1. Yeah, he’s done some really nice complete panel/case makeovers on vintage synths.

        1. I saw those, and his handywork looks good, but I think his artwork still leaves a good bit to be desired. Particularly the fonts.

Unfortunately, that’s the nature of innovation. Someone invents something cool, then someone else rips it off for a quick buck..claiming with a straight face that the ‘fat cats’ are forcing people to pay over the odds for a product and competition is good for everyone. So they make easy money without any of the development costs or effort.

    Parasitic bar-stewards.

As regards to your current problems, I think that copyright covers the situation. If someone had started offering pirated games for sale on eBay, being a direct rip-off of an established product, then they’d have to recognise it as being counterfeit, like all rip-off merchandise. If Trading Standards can pull it out of shops, then they can pull it off online auctions too. The internet shouldn’t absolve you from doing the right thing, either by choice or through law..
