PowerMac G5

Well, thanks to the help of a friend I now have a Mac Pro on the way to me at a rather nice price. I’ve also ordered the extra RAM it needs to fit my needs. In the end it’ll be a quad core Xeon 2.66 GHz box with 3GB of RAM, 1x250GB and 4x320GB hard disks (two internal, two external for backups), and all my old peripherals.

That said, I’m now selling my Power Mac G5. If any of you are interested, I’ll give you first crack at it. I’m asking US$1500, and it is as follows:

Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 (PowerPC)
3.5GB RAM
2x 160GB Hard Disk
DVD Writer (SuperDrive)
All Original Software (Yes, I can ensure that Classic is on it.)
OS X 10.4 (Legal, Licensed, Boxed Retail Copy which I had purchased separately)
All original packaging, accessories, and cabling.
Apple Mighty Mouse

It’s been real well cared for, hasn’t left the air conditioned / non-smoking room it’s been housed in since I got it, and hasn’t ever had any problems. All but 512MB of the RAM was purchased from Crucial and is under their lifetime warranty.

I will ship it anywhere in the world, but please remember that the Power Mac G5s are mighty heavy. The case is beautiful, but it’s also a large hunk of solid aluminum.

This machine makes for a great photo / video editing workstation and is probably a bit overpowered for normal desktop use. Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, all of those run great on it.

Oh, and it will run OS X 10.5 which is slated to be released this year — buying this machine isn’t a dead end of any sort.

If you get that much for it, let me know… I might have to upgrade to a Mac Pro as well! :)

    1. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Sure. :) I really expect to get that much if I list it on eBay, I just don’t want to deal with the hassle. Since mine has all the original stuffs I expect it to go for that much. Without that it might be a little less, but I’m thankful to not have to find a box to ship it in.

I was just checking ebay… looks like I can get around $2k (give or take) for my dual 2.7. I love Mac resale!

I might make a purchase when I go to work tonight…

        1. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Yep. :D Just about 50% depreciation for 3.75 year old hardware? Not bad at all. The PC world can’t touch that…

Be sure to check educational discount on the Apple side. A Dual 2.66 with wireless stuffs should run you less than $2400, and an extra 2GB from Crucial.com is $229.

Are you going to get AppleCare? I’m torn… My G5 didn’t need it, and the prone-to-fail parts in desktops can easily be replaced by hand.

          1. rev_rance May 29, 2007

Educational discount?! Pshaw! I’m an Apple Employee!@ (I’d tell you what my discount is, but then Apple would have to kill me.)

I have Applecare on my PowerMac. Haven’t used it, but it’s got two years left on it. Have it on my Powerbook as well, which I have used. Would I get it again on a new Mac Pro? If I was planning to stay in the states, probably yeah. It’s just nice to be able to drop the machine off at a store and say “here, fix it.” But, APP isn’t portable to different countries for desktops.

          2. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Oh, yeah… Hrm. That’s true. Also, EPP AppleCare is $9 more than Educational, I think. Well, if the price I saw is the ‘Friends and Family’ thing…

          3. rev_rance May 29, 2007

Employees have two discounts available to them, personal, and the F&F plan. The rates are different for each.

          4. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Ohh…. Nice. I bet you’re going to get a really nice price on it. Excellent. :)

          5. rev_rance May 29, 2007

            *big monster nod*

The only reason I haven’t done it yet is because I don’t want to go through the hassle of ebaying the old one (plus, ebay and paypal take sooo much for fees anymore). I’d kind of like to have someone in the channel to buy it as well, so I know I’m not going to have an extra $2k riding on my credit card for too long.

            We’ll see… we’ll see.

          6. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Yeah. I’m going to be out that. But, at least it’s a better deal than buying a $2500 PC and watching it devalue to $200 over the same 3 year period. :\

          7. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

So… Did you get one? ;)

          8. rev_rance May 30, 2007

            Nah. I’m a wuss.

Actually, I’ve been really hellbent on paying off debt lately. Last month I started agressively paying off the $5k balance on my credit card, and I should have it paid off in July. So, the thought of adding more to it just isn’t sitting well.

I want to though, I really want to. Especially since I’m pushing Logic Pro pretty hard. Using all software instruments (granted, I’m using 10 or so per track), it’s got both processors pegged at 80% or so.

I was also just checking ebay fees… if I get $2k out of the dual 2.7, I’m probably looking at at *least* $60 in ebay fees alone, then throw paypal fees on top of that. Ugh!

          9. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

I understand that. My card would be paid off next month (well, end of June / beginning of July), but the current high resale value of the G5s pushed me towards this.

Yeah, those fees will be really high. Still, I can’t think of a way to get that much for it outside of eBay, so I just take the fees into account. :\

        2. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

Oh! wait… I forgot you work there too. Heh. Excellent. Employee pricing is nicely below edu, except for AppleCare.

          1. rev_rance May 29, 2007

            *bzzzztt*

I’m pretty sure the employee discount on anything beats any other discount.

          2. c0nsumer May 29, 2007

That’s what I ended up getting… It wasn’t hugely cheaper than Employee for the MP, but it’s a good bit less.

  2. artemis5819 May 30, 2007

damnit…you sell stuff too close together. I have to recoup from the scanner before I can go buying a new desktop!

haha…I’ll need one eventually and for $1500…damn…I wish. Looks like I’ll be waiting quite awhile to update the desktop. Thought about selling me old one now since I have the laptop but if you’re only going to get $1500 for a g5…I might as well throw my g4 tower in the trash when I’m done with it ; (

    1. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

$1500 is pretty good for a 3.5 year old machine, really. Hell, the Mac Pro will only be about $2500.

      1. artemis5819 May 30, 2007

I know it is…but I also know that it means my g4 which is like 6 years old maybe…is worth nothing! Sucks when I bought it we paid around 5k for it.

I had another question for you about buying something from the UK…hit me on AIM when you’re not swamped and I’ll fill ya in.

        1. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

          Find me online tomorrow. :)

  3. arcsine May 30, 2007

Damn, if only you were selling a used Mac Mini, I could use one in the new house.

    1. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

Sorry. :\ This will definitely do in its place, though… ;)

      1. arcsine May 30, 2007

I actually want a PC to mount behind (and hook up to) the TV in the kitchen for recipes and such.

        1. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

          Oh, yeah… Not this then.

Maybe you should look at something smaller than the mini?

          1. arcsine May 30, 2007

Price really overrules size in this case, I don’t want to put down +$1000 for something I’m going to use as a glorified cookbook.

          2. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

Yeah… Although personally I got over the electronic cookbook idea a while ago. I tried it with a laptop and found it to be a bit clunky. It just never came out as smooth as I would have liked. Instead I print recipes as I need them and file them in a cabinet.

          3. arcsine May 30, 2007

I have been doing that, but I tend to get them stained sooner or later and end up throwing them out knowing I can print another copy if I want.

          4. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

I found that cost of paper (and even its environmental impact) was less than a whole machine which is only used for ~1% of the week for looking up recipes. I had also used it for music, but an Airport Express hooked to the stereo in the next room works better for that as well.

          5. arcsine May 30, 2007

Hrrm, I wonder if there’s any kind of “thin client” type solution I could get that would allow me to set up a terminal services session to my machine upstairs…

          6. c0nsumer May 30, 2007

Just find some cheesey little box which will output VGA and serve as an xterm. Intergrate that into a cheap flatscreen with touchpanel.

          7. arcsine May 30, 2007

I’ve already got the display, which takes VGA but isn’t touchscreen, I’m probably going to just go with a cheapie mouse since there’s a risk of engoopination.
