Making, baking, and (un-)breaking things in Southeast Michigan.

Good Morning…

Well, this is just what I wanted to see when I read my webserver’s log files this morning.

rez.nuxx.net kernel log messages:
> ad10: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=208317255
> ad10: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (1 retry left) LBA=208317255
> ad10: FAILURE - READ_DMA timed out
> GEOM_MIRROR: Request failed (error=5). stripe/stripe1[READ(offset=213316869632,length=4096)]
> GEOM_MIRROR: Device mirror1: provider stripe/stripe1 disconnected.

And the output from a script I wrote to check the RAID status daily:

GEOM mirror status:
Name Status Components
mirror/mirror0 COMPLETE ad0
ad2
mirror/mirror1 DEGRADED stripe/stripe0

GEOM stripe status:
Name Status Components
stripe/stripe0 UP ad4
ad6
stripe/stripe1 UP ad8
ad10

< sigh > At least I’ve got some spare disks… And I just happened to run a backup last night.

(Just FYI, there’s no data loss. One of the stripes which makes up half of the 0+1 array I use for data has gone offline due to a disk faililng.)

The furnace… Fixed itself after being shut off all day. And my house only cooled 5 – 8 degrees. ;)

Actually, I pulled open the install manuals and schematics for the furnace, and it seems that this model has no flame sensor beyond the one on the pilot light, so either that is dirty (or worn) or else there is a problem with the air flow sensor. Or the filter is dirty. I haven’t checked either of those yet.

One thing to note, the pilot light burns for a good two minutes before the main burner lights, so I’m tending to think that the thermocouple on the pilot is dirty, worn, or both.

Hmm… I think it’s actually sort of two metal plates between which the flame sits, so maybe it’d just be easier to replace it. I’ll have to look into ordering the part tonight, I think.

And yes, thanks for letting me brainstorm. With regards to the server, I guess I’ll go slap in a new disk tomorrow or Wednesday…

Hopefully I can get it sorted out on Wednesday…

By the way, I hear you know a little something about PIC programming?

PICs are ace! Whats bothering you with them.. I’d be happy to lend a hand…

Oh, you know that Honda thing I’d been having issues with? It seems that it has a 16F876A and a few other components in it, along with some not-too-complex circuitry. I want to make it do my bidding, but I’m not exactly sure where to start yet.

In short, I want it to show up as a CD changer, and when someone presses certain buttons on the head unit (sending commands to the supposed CD changer) it just needs to throw a bit of serial data at the iPod.

I can get lots more info as soon as I get this damn photo rig set up at home so I can properly figure out the parts on the PCB.
