Trader Joe’s 2005 Vintage Ale

Yesterday when poking picking up some groceries at Trader Joe’s I noticed some rather interesting bottles labeled ‘Trader Joe’s’ but with a distinctly Unibroue bit of text below the label priced at $4.99. Looking at the cap and the back of the bottle shows that yes indeed, Unibroue makes it. Based on this I picked up a bottle, but I still haven’t given it a try yet.

So I have to ask, have any of you happened to try this rather interesting private label bottling by one of Quebec’s finest breweries?

I should also note that the metal cap covering the top of the cork is identical to the one on a bottle of Unibroue’s 2005, but the bottle is (obviously) different.

On a related note, I added a bunch more photos to the beer section of my photo gallery (photo gallery retired). I’ll point to some of the more notable ones here:

· New Holland Brewing Company’s Dragon’s Milk Ale
· Each of the beers in Bell’s Wheat Project: Wheat Two, Wheat Four, Wheat Six, Wheat Eight, and Wheat Love
· Dogfish Head’s Pangaea
· Lindemans Framboise Lambic

Oh, and there should be a bottle of Dogfish Head‘s Fort in there soon, to hopefully be opened on NYE. I received a call earlier this evening from my favorite local beer shop The Red Wagon Wine Shoppe that it had come in. Woo!

I think I may head out to the Red Wagon to get drinks for NYE, wanting to get into something different, and that definitely looks like the store to do so.

  2. Really? Sleeman? Hrm… Well, we’ll see, I guess.

I just wish I could get my taste for beer back after being sick. I don’t know why, but it’s just not appealing to me at all still. :(

    1. Yeah, Sleeman bought Unibroue about a year [?] ago… I was really worried that they were going to fuck up the program – but so far, so good…

I also worry about Scharffen-Berger Chocolate in SF, as they were purchased by the mighty Hersheys. Please, please dont mess that up, Hersheys.

      1. A-B is buying regional craft breweries..fear that more

  3. Whoops, closed that tag wrong. :\

And yeah, hrm. I need to try that Kuhnhenn stuff. and I actually ended up there after Bastone the other night, but we just hung out for a little while and had a single pint each.

    1. Bastone is one of my favorite spots – how do you like it?

      1. Beer – Great!
        Food – Meehhh.

      2. I thought it was quite nice, and the food seemed pretty tasty. The beer is decent and pretty darn cheap. I think that overall it would be a nice place to take a date.

  4. I will most definitely have to take a look and see if our TJs has this. Its funny too – before I read the words below the picture, I was like, “whoa, that looks like a UNIBROUE!” If you try it, let me know how it is.

I took some Dogfish Head Immort Ale over to Christmas Eve dinner, and damn if that doesnt pack a punch. Whats even better, is Frog Island has what they call their “Christmas Spruce” beer, at Ashleys, in Ypsi. Damn good stuff, and packs a whallop!

    1. Immort is pretty good. The DFH ale house by me is releasing Burton Baton soon

      \m/

    2. That was the same thing I thought when I saw it in the store. I saw the font on the bottle and thought “damn, TJs is just copying now” but… yeah.

      I’ll definitely let you know… I’m hoping it’s good. :)

  5. Need.

Maybe hit Discount Drinks later tonight?
    We’ll be in your area, house-lookin’. :)

  6. I was tempted to get some of that, but iono if the roommies would help me drink it. Mayhaps I’ll have to get it for our little NYE gathering.

    1. Go for it. :) It’s really, really cheap.

      1. Alright, alright. I’ll go get some soon.
