…so while talking to tonight, it somehow came up that I had made floggers / whips out of both network and IDE cable while working at various jobs in the past. Typically they were made simply by bundling the cables (or strands thereof as in the case of the IDE cable) into whatever handle was handy, be it a pen tube or a plastic test tube.

Well, for some reason I decided to make another, and proper, CAT5-based flogger. So, thanks to some boredom and a random burst of creativity, an hour and twenty minutes later I had it done.

Thirteen tails, each twenty inches long, comprised of six grey pieces of CAT5e, and seven of blue CAT5. In order to make them softer, more flexible, and lighter they have had the conductors removed. They are bundled together inside the handle with three large cable ties and friction-fitted into a six-inch metal (aluminum, I believe) handle. A blue / blue & white conductor pair from inside the cables is wrapped on the ends of the handle for finishing. The strands were straightened to eliminate the curling typically found in network cable.

In the end it turns out to be rather solid, with the strands having a texture like that of tanned leather. The strands are very solidly seated into the handle and will withstand a decent tug. It can also be swung with all the force I can exert and nothing budges.

you should make them with and without the core removed and sell them at bdsm conventions. I promise people will buy them. They feel good. Floggers made out of coax cable however, are just for the hardcore or as a novelty item.

I was discussing that with someone today. If I could get some more anodized tubing, I could probably make them relatively cheap. The hardest part is stripping out the centers of the cable. Hmm, It also might be hard to bundle ones without the cores removed, because I relied in being able to crush the hollow tubing down to friction fit it all into the handle.

That, and working on the wire wrapping…

Maybe if I got some appropriate metal tubing, some black epoxy or potting compound (for finishing the butt), and made up… Say… 20 of them, I could list them on eBay and maybe bring in some extra cash. Hell, I could even add RJ45 ends of people really wanted it.

Oh, and I was thinking of coax, but the only stuff I have is kinda hard to come by. It’s copper braided core / copper shield which I use for making high quality custom audio cables. It’s soft and fairly flexible and would hurt like a bitch.

it does hurt like a bitch. I’ve been hit with a flogger made out of it. And uncored ethernet cable. And cord made out of metal beads. among other things. I’ve seen the ethernet floggers made with the ends and without. I’ve just never seen them in quantity which is why I think they’d sell.

Hmm, I really might have to make some then. The job really wasn’t tough. I started playing that new mix I posted, got to work, and had the workspace cleaned up right as the mix ended. The whole thing was designed and built in under 1:20. So I think it’d really be feasable to make a small run of them. Hmm…

The only other problem to solve would be how to nicely cap the ends of the CAT5 itself when it still contains the conductors. Perhaps some solid-color hot melt glue? That way it wouldn’t look ugly…

dunno.. the one I saw wasn’t capped off but it might be different if you’re selling it.

Well, the way I am I’d want them to be as perfect as possible if I were selling them… Perhaps some clear heat shrink could be used effectively too…

Ideas… Ideas… Now to try and source some stainless tubing.

are there any cheap computer parts that would produce an effective “clasping” action? like to keep handcuffs closed? You could be on to some serious business here.
