On Sunday I decided to celebrate the warmish weather and go for a walk through one of my favorite, curious local parks, Holland Ponds. (Thanks to for reminding me of the proper name of this facility.) For an hour or two I wandered through the park, looking around, taking pictures of various things. For those who don’t know, this park is located right next to the G&H Landfill site, an EPA Superfund project. It’s really interesting to see how far the site has come from it’s previous use as a waste dump. While I did find some barrels ( 1 · 2 ) floating in the river – which I reported to the EPA and National Response Center (Report #752142) – this was a really nice walk and I got a much better feel for how everything is laid out there. By the time I was done, my boots and the lower half of my pants were completely saturated, but it was worth it. All the snow was melting, the sun was out, and it was almost 50°F that day.
So, if you’d like to see some pictures from the walk, give this link a click. Towards the end of the gallery there are some interesting concrete textures that I grabbed from the foundation of a barn.
That place is like a mile or two from my apartment, I’ll have to check it out sometime.
There are a lot of neat parks around that area… Riverbends is home to what was a Nike Missile site. Enter off of Ryan, and the buildings on your left towards the end are the old barracks. There’s also a great disc golf court there, and some NICE paths for skating. Smooth asphault, HUGE hills, and a bridge./
i’m really impressed with the quality/sharpness of your photos lately….i NEED a camera that does RAW.
That was actually all taken in FINE JPEG mode. That’s also on the two-year old camera I picked up for $299 at Costco… I think it’s all in the lens. If we get together about that DVD stuff, I can show it to you. Real slick tool, in my opinion. Also, as I was just wandering around outside, they were all shot in program mode.
It’s amazing what RAW will do on top of that…
I’d love to venture out there with you one day. We’ve talked about the report I did on LDI/G&H as superfund sites in the 6th grade (gads I’m old) and I’m interested in its current conditions. Also, I need to talk to my dad and get some of his old photos from Danny’s Dump that used to be right on the corner at 23 and Ryan. Danny, the owner of the junkyard, lived on the property in a small trailer with his dogs. Interesting stuff.
Oh, wow. If you can get negatives, I could scan them all in… I’d love to have them available to look at. :)
Let me know when you want to go wandering. Jeff and I are also supposed to walk the tracks into the Ford plant one day. The gate is now open, and normal trespass laws apply. :)
I don’t know if they have negatives, these were taken in the late 70’s or early 80’s. But I’ll do my best. :)
My dad also has many photos of the old Ford track prior to construction – he snuck in a few years ago. He used to work at that plant years ago prior to starting the business he and my mother own today. I think he was laid off around 1979? He’s kind of a amateur historian of Shelby/Utica/Washington, its one of his hobbies. :)
That’s probably good, because the guy I talked to from the historical soceity was somewhat of an ass. If I remember right, he told me that he didn’t want to put all their info up online, because they want people to come to them and ask them for stuff, then they would give them the info that they need.
So. Fucking. Stupid.
gotta love random barrels
