Beer – Part Deux!

[Crossposted to and .]

Well, about five and a half days have passed since I brewed up my first batch of beer. As the bubbling has slowed to about four per minute, I figured it was time to get the beer off the trub (the yeast and gunk at the bottom of the fermenter) and into a secondary fermenter to allow it to batch age.

So, that’s what I did, and there’s pictures of it available. To see them, either click here or on the photo above. I’ve also uploaded my current brewing notes in case anyone is interested in reading them.

Some of the notable pictures include:

· I’m impressed by the clarity of the beer thus far.
· The trub – the stuff lingering in the bottom of the fermenter.
· The fermenter, sanitized and ready to go.
· It’s likely to batch age like this for the next two weeks.

Oh, and if anyone here who also brews beer sees anything that I’m doing wrong or can provide me with any pointers, I’d greatly appreciate them.

Thanks!

  1. It appears you spend your time well :) bravo!

    1. Thanks. :) I didn’t mention it, but it already tastes like Newcastle, but without carbonation. This is expected, though, because carbonation is added in the bottle.

I’m rather curious as to how much the innitial set up cost was for the equipment, as well as how much it cost you for fresh supplies (hops etc…)

    1. Total for everything I needed was about $160 or so. I used pellitized hops instead of fresh, and that all came as part of a boxed kit. The kits are still fresh because they contain yeast, which will go bad… I think the kit I got normally runs about US$23, and the bottled water was about another $7.

The cost really depends on the ingredients…

Oh, and that cost includes the price of a pretty decent, very readable book about brewing beer, called How to Brew by John J. Palmer.

Remind me not to look at lj when I’m eating. :P

    1. :P

It’s just a bucket of beer with yeast lumps floating on top.

      Hehe…

Yeah I kinda got that, but it does look like something else.

  4. When my parents used to brew their own beer they certainly enjoyed it. However, make sure you are prepared for the consequences. See, my parents brewed so much beer and over such a long period of time that years after they had stopped certain spots in the house reaked of beer. And it wasn’t all the time, perhaps it was my mind playing tricks on me, but I dont think so.

    Other then that bon appetite.

    1. Woah, hey you. :) How are things going?

hey kiddo, things are good, very good, beena happy weekend. how the heck you been?

        1. Oh, my vacation is just winding down, so I got some laundry done, made some KD for dinner, and now I’m here trying to get a boatload of negatives scanned in. We’ll see how that goes. :)

I’ve got a bunch of photos from the 90s that are on 35mm film, and I want to get them all scanned in.

What did you do this weekend?

          1. ninthline November 21, 2004

i got paid, babysat my neice, went to see one of my very very favorite musicians, drank delicious hot chocolate, wandered the streets, visited old friends, made new friends, walked my dog down by the river, made biscotti, salmon and delicious noodles, and lunch for tomorrow, walked eeeverywhere, went to a swedish christmas market, visited friends and drank tea. :)

            best effin weekend.

          2. Ooh, wow. that sounds nice… :)

I’m hoping that I can get out and do something next weekend, as it’ll be nice and long due to US’ Thanksgiving.

Are you still in the Toronto area?

          3. ninthline November 22, 2004

yep i’m in the gta still, im working effed up hours this weekend which at least guarentees that i’ll be in town, but not much more :)

          4. Oh, poo. I was going to ask if you wanted company… :) I’m shamelessly pandering for crash space and someone out of town to visit. :)

    i only have 2 suggestions,
1)Don’t use plastic bottles ever (they’ll make your beer smell funky)

2)You might wanna move that out of your bathtub or you’re gonna be a dirty bastard and everyone at work will hate you for it

    1. One question… What kind of plastic containers did you use? I’ve got food grade (non-outgassing) plastics, although I don’t recall exactly which kind. This should impart no flavor at all, because it’s designed for long-term storage of foods…

And… hehe… that’s my spare bathroom. The one I normally use is tucked off of my bedroom, and as I’m single, there’s no one to use the other one. :) In fact, there isn’t any soap in the shower, even. :)

Neat pictures. I have always wanted to try brewing my own beer ;D Was it good?

    1. Not sure yet. :) It’s not done… Hehe. Maybe another four weeks and it’ll be ready. :)

      1. studlyspam November 22, 2004

EEeee… you have to wait an entire month? ;P I don’t know if i would be patient enough for that ;D

        1. Hehe… Well, it takes a while to age beer, and I want to give it plenty of time to settle out so that it’s nice and clear and such. :) It’ll hopefully be bottled the weekend after this one.

          1. studlyspam November 22, 2004

Yeah, as they say, good things take time. I realize this, but still have trouble being patient ;D So I guess I will just drink this German Weizen ;P

Hope your beer turns out well ;D

          2. Thank you. :) I’ve got some Bell’s Winter White Ale in the fridge at home to take care of me until then. :)
