!!!

Another thing for sale… Is anyone interested in a Netpliance I-Opener? It’s the original version, already hacked, with a 1GB hard drive installed, ready to go, USB network adapter, etc. I’ve also got a mouse/keyboard splitter so that you can use any PS/2 mouse and keyboard with it. Getting the hard drive in there required replacing the heatsink and doing some ninja-type mounting and fitting. It’s definitely not stock, but *is* ideal.
I just want $100 for it… In the original box, also with original keyboard and docs and firmware intact, etc. It works just fine, I just have no need for it anymore.
Otherwise, it’s going up on eBay, too.
Oh, in case you don’t know what one of these is, it’s a single panel computer/display with a modem, USB port, parallel port, etc. Great for running Linux or Windows 98 or whatever else you feel like on it.
What do you mean by hacked? It didn’t have a hard drive before? Did it have a different OS on it?
These machines originally came with just an internal flash chip which stored the OS. There conveniently is an internal IDE connector. Removing the CPU’s heatsink and replacing it with a smaller heatsink/fan, then using a mounting bracket and specially modified cable, one is able to install a hard drive inside the device.
This is what I did… That, combined with re-flashing the BIOS to one that will boot the hard drive, and adding some more memory. I think it’s got 32MB in it now, up from the original 16MB.
Oh, and on the flash chip was a customized version of QNX designed for the original use of the machine – an email / internet appliance.
Yeah, it’s a bit older machine, but it’s a great project box, which is why I originally picked it up. Unfortunately it’s not anything I really have the time for anymore…
Oh, and a similarly modified I-Opener goes for about $120 – $130 on eBay.
damnit i wish i had $100 i could use that thing
Find the coin or make me an offer. :) You’re welcome to it… The price is fair, though, as ones on eBay similarly modified typically go for $120 – $130 or more.
no, i really can’t afford it right now. im not trying to talk you down or anything, i couldnt afford it even if it was $50. it’d just be nice to have instead of this massive behometh im currently using for a second box (which all i really use it for is to websurf anyways :P)
Is it pretty portable, or more or less meant to be stationary ? If it’s portable I’m interested :))
Nope, it’s stationary… Well, you could do other things with it. It’s very much a project computer, though. Some people have car mounted them, etc. I had mine in the kitchen as a recipe station for a while, intending to turn it into a remote control for music. Then I got my iPod and, well, that went out the window. You can see it running in my old apartment here.
Search around online for info about them and you’ll see what it is… A nifty machine, but a project.
lol recipe station
