As was suggested by some friends I started with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.python.org\/download\/releases\/2.6.2\/\">Python 2.6.2<\/a>, which is the latest version of the previous branch of the language. (There is also a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.python.org\/download\/releases\/3.0.1\/\">3.0 branch<\/a>, but it&#8217;s my understanding that it&#8217;s not yet widely used and is sufficiently different from the previous version that it&#8217;s best to start at 2.6.2.)<\/p>\n<p>After going through most of the <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.python.org\/tutorial\/index.html\">very nice official Python tutorial<\/a> I began playing with Windows-specific things, most notably <a href=\"http:\/\/timgolden.me.uk\/python\/wmi.html\">Tim Golden&#8217;s WMI Module<\/a>, which seems to work quite well.
