I feel that so long as the tire remains ~20% wider than the rim itself the benefits are great: more sidewall support, less tire roll when cornering, and higher volume of air all while rolling resistance seems the same. I recently played with building up a <a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/2014\/04\/04\/high-volume-tire-for-rigid-fork\/\">Velocity Dually-based front wheel<\/a>\u00a0for the El Mariachi Ti. At 45mm wide it made a 2.4&#8243; Schwalbe Racing Ralph about 63mm wide and felt great to ride, but the heavy rim was noticeable. For me the holy grail would have been a wide wheelset that isn&#8217;t any heavier than a more-typical XC set,\u00a0like the <a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/acquired_stuff\/salsa_el_mariachi_ti\/unboxing_assembly\/IMG_7346.jpg.html\">Shimano XT \/ Stan&#8217;s NoTubes Arch EX<\/a> set that came with the El Mariachi Ti.<\/p>\n<p>With the recent <a title=\"Shimano XT Freehub (Y3CZ98040) Failure Analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/2014\/06\/08\/shimano-xt-freehub-y3cz98040-failure-analysis\/\">XT freehub failure<\/a> I got to thinking seriously about new wheels, and after a few months of trawling eBay I found myself with all the parts needed to build up just what I wanted at a sane price: 35mm wide carbon fiber rims from China, high-quality hubs from Switzerland, tires from Germany, and spokes from&#8230; wherever spokes come from.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time I was able to switch to a 142&#215;12 rear through axle, which is something I&#8217;d been wanting to do for a while, since I&#8217;m quite fond of the positive engagement and installed-straight-or-not-installed-at-all nature of a through axle. They can&#8217;t become skewed like a traditional\u00a0quick releases which can be a bit skewed.<\/p>\n<p>In the end they came out great, and even though I only have an hour and a half of riding on them, I&#8217;m quite content. If things go as planned I&#8217;ll no longer need the the Stan&#8217;s wheelset and will be able to sell that, further offsetting the cost.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/stuffivemade\/35mm_bicycle_wheels\/IMG_7975.jpg.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Wheels built with black nipples, all ready to go.\" src=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/d\/106124-2\/IMG_7975.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Spokes<\/h2>\n<p>Contrary to Light-Bicycle&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.light-bicycle.com\/35mm-wide-29er-rims-beadless-for-bicycle-trail-or-mountain-bike-enduro-with-tubeless-compatibility.html\">claim of 589mm<\/a>, I\u00a0measured the the <a href=\"http:\/\/sheldonbrown.com\/gloss_e-f.html#erd\">ERD<\/a>\u00a0on these 35mm rims as 592mm. With the DT 240s hubs this resulted in spoke lengths of 288mm (left) and 289mm (right) for the front wheel, and \u00a0289mm (left) and 287mm (right) for the rear. I was able to get Ritchey-branded DT Swiss Competition spokes (<a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/stuffivemade\/35mm_bicycle_wheels\/IMG_7968.jpg.html\">photo<\/a>) from <a href=\"http:\/\/stores.ebay.com\/Bens-Cycle-and-Fitness\">Ben&#8217;s Cycles&#8217; eBay store<\/a> in exactly the lengths needed. These spoke lengths worked out very nicely and the wheels came together great.<\/p>\n<p>DT Swiss aluminum nipples in black were chosen for light weight and appearance, and since I&#8217;ll mostly be riding these in fair weather corrosion shouldn&#8217;t be an issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Tire Width \/ Volume<\/h2>\n<p>After\u00a0allowing the finished wheels\u00a0to sit with the tires at ~30 PSI for a couple of days, the\u00a0tire casings (excluding protruding knobs) measure at 61.3mm and 59.2mm (front and rear). When compared to the 56.6mm and 53.0mm size of the previous Arch EX \/ 2.25&#8243; Racing Ralph \/ 2.1&#8243; Kenda Small Block Eight setup (<a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/acquired_stuff\/salsa_el_mariachi_ti\/complete_bike\/IMG_7359.jpg.html\">photo<\/a>) the front is 4.7mm wider\u00a0and the rear is \u00a07.2mm wider. Presuming a 622mm radius of the center of the tire, this is a 17.3% increase in volume on the front wheel and 24.6% on the rear. I suspect this&#8217;ll do very nice things for the feel of the bike, even though I&#8217;m still using fast-rolling tires.<\/p>\n<h2>Weight \/ Mass<\/h2>\n<p>The main concern with going to wider rims is usually\u00a0an increase in rotating mass. With the advent of low-cost, wide carbon fiber rims much of this has been\u00a0mitigated. The Light-Bicycle rims that I received came in at 420g and 422g (front and rear), which is\u00a0about 40g each lighter than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notubes.com\/Arch-EX-Rims-C119.aspx\">Stan&#8217;s NoTubes Arch EX<\/a>s they are replacing. Combined with lighter weight hubs, even using heavier, wider tires resulted in an overall lighter set of wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the aluminum freehub body on the DT Swiss hubs I chose a Shimano XT (CS-M771-10) 11-36 cassette (<a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/stuffivemade\/35mm_bicycle_wheels\/IMG_7971.jpg.html\">photo<\/a>), as its solid aluminum carriers should mitigate\u00a0damage to the splines. The old\u00a0cassette was getting near 3000 miles and due for replacement, so buying a new one at this point wasn&#8217;t much of a bother. At 339g this is is about 27g lighter than the SRAM PG-1050 previously used on the bike, which also helped to save weight.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the bike is\u00a0just a bit lighter with these much-wider wheels than it was when originally built (26.00 pounds w\/ Garmin Edge 510 + blinky light mount vs. 26.10 w\/ Garmin Edge 500 and no light mount). This meets my desire of wider rims\u00a0without much additional weight.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the breakdown of mass for each part:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Hub:<\/strong> 126g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Hub:<\/strong> 228g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Rim:<\/strong> 420g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Rim:<\/strong> 422g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Front Tire:<\/strong> 634g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rear Tire:<\/strong> 644g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rotor Lockring:<\/strong> 8g\/ea<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Cassette:<\/strong> 339g<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Valve Stems:<\/strong> 8g\/ea<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Aluminum Nipples:<\/strong> 9g for 32<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rim Tape:<\/strong> 8g\/wheel (estimated)<\/p>\n<p>The final result for each\u00a0each complete\u00a0wheel, with sealed tire, rotor lockring, and cassette (but without rotor) is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>New Front:<\/strong> 1.49kg<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Old Front:<\/strong> 1.55kg<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>New Rear:<\/strong> 1.93kg<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Old Rear:<\/strong> 2.18kg<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Total Savings:<\/strong>\u00a00.31kg \/ 0.68 pounds<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/acquired_stuff\/salsa_el_mariachi_ti\/complete_bike\/IMG_7989.jpg.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Non drive side rear view showing the Rock Shox Maxle and Salsa 142x12 Alternator swing plates.\" src=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/d\/106176-2\/IMG_7989.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Through Axle<\/h2>\n<p>Along with going to wider rims, the new wheelset allowed me to\u00a0switch to a 142&#215;12 rear axle using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/gallery\/v\/acquired_stuff\/salsa_alternator_12x142\/\">Salsa Alternator Dropout Set 12&#215;142 w\/Maxle<\/a>\u00a0set. This appears to weigh a bit more than the previous quick release (I didn&#8217;t measure), but this is offset by the lighter wheels. I&#8217;m really happy with how the Salsa set went together. Installing the rear wheel with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sram.com\/rockshox\/products\/rear-maxle-lite\">SRAM Maxle Lite<\/a>\u00a0was extremely simple, I just slid it into place, held it while inserting the axle, then tightened the axle down. There was no need to hold the wheel up in the dropouts while tightening down the axle like with a traditional\u00a0QR.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ride<\/h2>\n<p>Most importantly, the ride. This afternoon I headed out for a shakedown ride with the wheels, heading from home up through River Bends, over to Holland Ponds, through Bloomer, then up to some friends&#8217; place in Rochester Hills.\u00a0In short, it went quite well. At first I was a little hesitant, but upon hearing no spoke pings and after a few small curb drops feeling fine I headed into River Bends and started riding the single track.<\/p>\n<p>The ~27 PSI that I&#8217;d initially filled them to was\u00a0a bit much, so after washing out in one corner I dropped the pressure a bit, and things got better. I still have to play with the pressure a bit more, but riding\u00a0through familiar trails the wheels felt just\u00a0like what I was hoping for: wider, with a bit more traction, and still great rolling resistance.
