{"id":1413,"date":"2009-03-29T21:02:57","date_gmt":"2009-03-30T02:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/?p=1413"},"modified":"2009-03-29T21:02:57","modified_gmt":"2009-03-30T02:02:57","slug":"bicycle-helmet-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/2009\/03\/29\/bicycle-helmet-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"Bicycle Helmet Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While doing research on bicycle helmets, and specifically my <a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/2009\/03\/28\/helmet-damage-necessitates-new-helmet\/\">old Specialized helmet and new Giro one<\/a>, I found something interesting. It seems that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smf.org\/\">Snell testing standards<\/a> for bicycle helmets are more stringent than those legally mandated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/\">CPSC<\/a>. Additionally, the CPSC standards are tested against by the manufacturer, while the Snell standards are independently verified.<\/p>\n<p>Making things more interesting, none of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giro.com\/site\/\">Giro<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellbikehelmets.com\/\">Bell<\/a> helmets conform to the Snell standards. The only name I recognized on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smf.org\/certlist\/std_B-90A_B-95A_B-90C_B-95C.html\">Snell-provided list of helmet manufacturers<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialized.com\">Specialized<\/a>, the company which manufactured the helmet I was wearing when I <a href=\"https:\/\/nuxx.net\/blog\/2009\/03\/27\/this-is-why-we-wear-helmets\/\">fell on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At this point I can&#8217;t help but wonder if I should return the Giro helmet I purchased and get something like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialized.com\/bc\/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=41617&#038;eid=321\">Specialized Instinct<\/a> instead.
