Sauna

I’m at work and it is HOT here. I don’t have a thermometer around anymore (it got moved into my basement) but it feels like the temperature is about 85°F. Nothing like sitting with your hands on an overheating notebook in a hot room, fully dressed, waiting for 45 minutes to pass.

At lunch today I picked up a new (to me) monitor. There’s this local place that has 21″ IBM Flatscreen monitors with Sony Trinitron tubes in them for $191 after tax. CAD monitors. Should be perfect for home. Now I’m just waiting until I can leave to sit in traffic. Mmm… Traffic.

Tonight I’m supposed to go to City Club with my friend Nick. This will be the third time he’s gone. Nick has a great job. He’s working over at Fredrick’s of Hollywood at Lakeside Mall. There’s something really satisfying about selling people purely luxury items. That means that they will always come in wanting to buy something, not feeling pressured by product failure (such as in the case of a washing machine) or hunger or something. Pure desire makes people much easier to deal with. I doubt he has to deal with many customers who are upset because they don’t understand the format of the lingerie or because they can’t figure out how to use it properly.

Maybe one day computers will be like lingerie. Or maybe not.

Hrm, my parents washer still isn’t working right. Defective wire? Another part intermittantly putting too much load on the timer? I don’t know… Uggh.

Flowers.

There are finally living flowers on my front porch again. It’s not like I remember a time when I had flowers growing there (although I know there were some when my grandparents were still here) but there were definately skeletal remains of flowers (or something organic) in the flower pots and around the tree.

I picked up some salvia for the long flower boxes and some saw toothed red thing for the small pot. Around the tree are some purple uhm… something. Something purple.

They’ve also been liberally watered with a Miracle-Gro solution. I’m supposed to do this twice a month (or so). Then every day they need to be watered. But that’s all right… Something to do when I get home from work. Besides poop.

Well, hopefully the flowers won’t die. If they do it’s not like it’s a huge investment, but then I will be forced to get rid of the flower pots and planting area around the tree. I either want nice looking things there or plain old grass. No more scraggly light grey things.

Hrm. The LiveJournal win32 client lives. I’m not sure how much I like this, but we’ll give it a go. I think what is needed are some options for editing the background and foreground text box colors. That wouldn’t be bad all…

I have to leave soon. I’m going to take Afie (my parent’s dog) back to my parent’s house. Also while I’m there I’m going to put the new timer in my parent’s washer. My dad would do it, but he has to work. I don’t mind. It’ll be easy.

So I’m having a discussion about what it means for someone to be defined as ‘weird’. Perhaps I’ll update later. Perhaps not..

Work.

Well, I guess that this is my first journal entry. The bit of text up above this window implys that I should be using a client to do this. Oh well. The clients here (or at least the win32 ones) don’t support proxies. I really should be doing more work here. Today is just… one of those days. I’m not sure how to describe it. A combination of bizarre thoughts while tired last night, strange dreams, strange sleep patterns, and odd thoughts while in the shower put me into a very meloncohly mood. Hopefully that all will pass.

For the past few days (and for the next week or so) I’m monitoring a conference call providing support for technicians in the field. I admit, it doesn’t sound too bad, but I’ve been assigned to do this on top of my normal workload. That’s where it gets interesting. We all know the problems inherent with a preemptive multi-tasking OS. People behave the same way. Woo! Think about it… We’re all Windows 3.1 inside. Now, let’s see why: There’s the benefit that many things can be “on your plate” at once, but when you switch between things, there is the cost of task switching. That’s what I’m running into now. That, and the stress/fear of losing my job. It is probably an irrational fear, but a very real one none the less. I’m under the impression that my manager feels that I don’t do any work. (A coworker of mine has been told this directly) and that is the reason why the extra work is being piled on.

Oh well.

That’s life.

VMware is ticking away in the background installing the Netware client into a copy of Windows 2000 Professional. I’m needing this in order to admin servers remotely. I don’t want my normal machine logging into the domain. The reboot just happened, I think I’ll go back to work now. Mmm… Netware. Mmm… Client. Mmm… Legacy. Mmm… Old.
